GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Last Thursday, October 10, the EGS girls met their match in the form of St Mary’s of Arklow. Always a great few matches, the games were full of energy and passion. It was clear that both sides really wanted the win and the ability to progress.
The under-16 team were successful in their campaign with a stellar performance from our captain, Prudence Isaac and our vice captains, Isabelle Clooney and Tori
Ryan. Neither girl let a challenge pass them and the whole team worked together in this regard.
Unfortunately our under-19 team put up a good attack and it was close throughout but with our numbers depleted, through injury, it was a tough match and well done to St Mary’s on the win 15-12. Our next challenge was to meet the Dominican College, who beat us convincingly the last time we met them in this division.
Thankfully our under-16s were ready and willing to see off some tough competition to beat them 30-23. It was a really good match with great performances from both sides. All the girls must be proud of their effort this time and we should be able to progress to the semi-finals.
Our under-19s also had a challenge on their hands with some strong experienced players on the Dominican side but our girls should hold there heads up high with a loss of only 26-39. Grace Hurley led the team as their captain while Cara Ryan and Ruth Evans, as vice Captains, kept the team motivated. As always it is a team effort and each of the girls have strengths in all aspects of the game.
We have thoroughly enjoyed all our matches to date and the contributions of each of the teams coaches should be acknowledged. Hopefully we will see some of them in the semis.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Our under-16 boys basketball team played our neighbours CCM recently. CCM took advantage of a slow start for our boys and held a good lead at the end of the first quarter. A change of defense from zone to man to man helped our boys get back into the game and we had a small lead at halftime. Both teams played some good basketball in the second half. Thankfully we managed to secure the win, with Niki Moelders, Ronan Gilpin, Zak Hastie and Scott Fitzpatrick really stepping up when they were needed.
BOYS RUGBY
The first year boys began their season with a match vs St David’s, Greystones. This side has a mixture of experience levels and they were well led by Brian Johnson, who controlled the game from out half, weighing in with a well worked try. However, there is no denying the star of the show was William Fitzpatrick crossing the line on no fewer than six occasions is balanced running a joy to see. His namesake in the pack was a constant threat and a thorn in the David’s side. They ran out 40-25 winners, showing plenty of promise for the season ahead.
EGS CAREERS
Gareth O’Neill, School Liaison Officer from the Technological University of Dublin spoke to senior students about the wide range of courses they offer and their new campus at Grangegorman.
GOAL JERSEY DAY
EGS had their Goal Jersey Day on Friday, October 11, €750 was raised. A new record. Thanks to all students and staff for partaking and contributing.
CLIMATE ACTION WEEK
EGS took part in Climate Action week 2019, by cutting down on single use plastic. Plastic cups and aluminium trays were not provided in the school canteen for the week. Reusable cups and lunchboxes were encouraged. For those students that may have forgot to bring these in, compostable cups and trays were provided.
TRANSITION YEAR NEWS
As we prepare for our week away up in Westport next week it would have been sensible to take some time out this week, but no, it’s been the TY’s busiest week so far.On Wednesday the whole year group walked into the Pastoral Centre at the De la Salle for a mental health workshop led by the Gr82bYng crew in conjunction with the ISPCC This was a fantastic day with laughs and tear in equal measure.
Thursday saw the group head off to Go Quest and the Explorium for maths week. This involved escape rooms, problem solving, physical challenges, indoor lightning, DIY tornadoes, gravity rooms and much much more. It’s safe to say our TY’s were put through their paces both physically and mentally. Finally Friday saw us join the other schools in the town on a 5km wellness walk along the Murrogh. The sun shone, the pace was relaxed and the promise of breakfast rolls and free teeshirts did wonders for group motivation.
I’m not sure we can keep this frenetic level of activity up for the whole year but one things for sure, by the time we get back from Killary we will definitely deserve the half term break.
