ALZHEIMER’S/ DEMENTIA SOCIETY

We meet every Friday at 11 a.m. in the Parkview Hotel Newtownmountkennedy. It is an opportunity for family members and carers to bring their loved ones for a coffee and a chat. Its open to people in the surrounding areas towns and villages.

MEN’S SHED

Wednesday last saw the gathering of Men’s Sheds throughout county Wicklow assembling at Newtown Community centre for a members showcase. An exhibition of work done in the individual sheds that make up the county membership was on show and was very well supported by all the sheds who in turn learned that Ireland alone has 435 sheds throughout the island, making us a force to be reckoned with, our Facebook page carried pictures of the showcase.

Activities in our shed have slowed somewhat as we head into winter, work tidying our allotments and preparing same for next Spring being the main task. Work within the community is continuing with tasks in progress for St Vincent de Paul shop in the village, also splitting and bagging some firewood kindly donated to the shed by a very generous person within the community, we at the Men’s Shed appreciate this substantial donation to our venture.

Sadly we have been hit by some serious illness among our members this last year, so we take this opportunity to reach out to those members going through tough times health wise and wish them calmer waters in the coming weeks ahead, we look forward to filling all their cups which have been too long empty, and their seats at the table which have been too long empty, get well soon.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

All our teams’ games went ahead last week despite more heavy rain making the playing pitches a lot heavier.

Our 8’s hosted Carnew FC where a total of 56 goals were scored between the two teams with the away side edging it by the bare minimum. On the day John Paul Dunleavy, Eoin Ledwidge and Finn Heffernan were among the players who starred.

Our under-9s hosted Wicklow Rovers Green and both sides played some excellent football on the day. Among those who were best on the day were Aaron Nolan, Conor Shevlin and Bobby Spillane.

It was a bad day at the office for our under-10s as they shipped a heavy defeat away to Roundwood FC John Turley and Jack Barlow scored the Newtown goals on a day when too many players were way below par.

Our 11’s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) kept up their recent good form with an impressive 5-2 win away to Greystones Green. Ryan Collins maintained his recent rich vein of form in front of goal with a hat trick. Aidan Heffernan and Daniel Eager added the other goals with two very tidy finishes. On the day Mikey Synnott, Aaron Roy and William Valentine were among the best players from Newtown. This finished a run of 19 points from a possible 21 to secure the team a semi-final place at the top of the table.

Our under-12s made the long journey for the top of the table shield clash with Shillelagh United. Against a very good side a goal either side of half time gave the home side a 2-0 victory.

Our ever-popular Development Squad continues every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. and now is in the community centre as the weather conditions deteriate. All boys and girls from 5-7 years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information. We are also on the lookout for a couple of more coaches to help with the group. If anyone male or female is interested, please contact our secretary at the contact details below.
