Councillors unhappy with ‘embarrassing’ toilet facilities
THE lack of toilet facilities in and around Wicklow Harbour is something local Councillors would like to see change.
The issue was raised at last week’s meeting of Wicklow Municipal District following a presentation by Paul Ivory, Senior Marine Officer.
Cllr John Snell described the toilet facilities located where Wicklow Swimming Club hold their races as ‘third world’.
Cllr Paul O’Brien, who is involved with the swimming club, said the lack of facilities was often ‘embarrassing’ when Wicklow is playing host to other clubs.
‘The harbour has changed a lot down through the years but, at times, it can be embarrassing when you have open swims and other Leinster clubs come to Wicklow. Not so much on a good day, but more when it is a bad day and lashing rain and someone asks ‘where are the toilets?’ and you have to send them up to what Cllr Snell quite correctly called a “third world” toilet.’
Cllr Mary Kavanagh commented on the lack of toilet and shower facilities beside the Black Castle, especially during busy occasions such as the Round Ireland Yacht Race.
‘There are no toilet or shower facilities. When you have a family day at the Black Castle or a Taste of Food festival, there are no facilities for the public or for people visiting the town. Wicklow Sailing Club do their best to accommodate people but we really need more facilities.’
Mr Ivory said he was in agreement with the comments and said it was something he would be willing to discuss further in an effort to find a solution.
