TIDY TOWNS HONOURED

- By EIMEAR DODD

Arklow Municipal District showed its pride with the success of its Tidy Towns groups.

The reception was held in the Arklow Bay Hotel on Thursday, October 24. It took place in honour of the Arklow Tidy Towns volunteer group, Arklow Tidy Towns, Community Employment Group Aughrim Tidy Towns, Clean-up Aughrim, Rathdrum Tidy Towns, Avoca Tidy Towns and Ballycoog Tidy Towns.

People who were interested in volunteering with existing groups and those hoping to set up Tidy Towns group in their own area also attended the celebration.

This year’s results showed an increase in points for all entrants. Arklow achieved a gold medal while Aughrim won a silver medal in the national competition.

The Tidy Towns competition can instil pride in the community and the desire to protect the landscape. The Tidy Towns initiative encourages people to be active and get involved in their community.

Aughrim and Arklow Tidy Towns groups were presented with plaques and a small token of appreciation for their work and achieving medal status in the 2019 awards.

Speaking on the night, Cllr Pat Fitzgerald, Cathaoirleach, Arklow Municipal District, expressed his thanks to all the volunteers, groups and the members of the outdoor staff for their continued efforts in keeping the district tidy and looking it best.

‘The dedication, commitment and passion of the volunteer groups is something to be proud of. It shows how local volunteers take ownership of their surroundings and work to improve them for both now and in the future,’ Cllr Fitzgerald said.
