WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 30 SPOOKY STORIES

Spooky stories and crafts for toddlers will take place in the children’s area of Arklow Library at 10 a.m. as part of the local Hallowe’en Festival.

WRITING WORKSHOP

Horror-themed writing workshop for primary school pupils will be held in Arklow Library at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Placees are limited. Sign-up through the schools and at the library desk. This event is part of the Arklow Hallowe’en Festival.

SPOOKY GHOST TOURS

Spooky ghost tours for the little monsters in your life take place at Wicklow Gaol from 1 p.m. A mini monster meeting in the monster lounge starts things off where children can have a go at pinning the bow on Mr Bones. Teas are then formed and the smallest member will be turned into a Mummy, with the best and fastest winning a prize. Follow the parade around the courtyard and the wicked witch will be watching and waiting to pick. The Scariest Costume, The Cutest Costume and the Best Home Made Costume. Family Ticket €30, Adult €11, Child €8.

SAVE THE PUMPKIN

An afternoon of fun events in honour of the humble pumpkin will take place at the Little Bray Community Centre from 2 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. Events will include family pumpkin carving from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., use that pumpkin cookery demonstrat­ions, children’s colouring competitio­n and informatio­n stands giving advice on healthy eating, shopping on a budget, reducing food waste and more. There will also be a fun fancy dress walk from 3.30 p.m. to 4 p.m. with prizes for the best costume. Registrati­on is essential so to book a place, call the centre on 01 2869577.

STORYTELLI­NG

Mighty Mythic Monsters storytelli­ng for primary school children will be held in the Arklow Library at 3 p.m. as part of the Arklow Hallowe’en Festival.

HALLOWE’EN KIDZ DISCO

Stagebratz Starz is hosting its annual spooktacul­ar family Hallowe’en disco in Roundwood Parish Hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will be plenty to entertain including ghoulish games, costume prizes, a dance-off competitio­n, face-painting, colouring corner and more. Profits will go towards the Stagebratz Starz Christmas mini panto. Entry is €5 per child (adults are free).

HALLOWEEN CAMPOUT

a Halloween Campout takes place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at River Valley Holiday Park. Come hungry as you will be served gorgeous food cooked over open fires, Pumpkin Soup and Hot Drinks. There will also be costume parades and magic shows. The Pumpkin Hunt and Night Train slots need to be pre-booked by ringing (0404)41647. Don’t forget your fancy dress and torches.

PARANOIA

Paranoia, the terrifying, adult-only scare house, returns at Glenart Outdoors from 7.20 p.m. to 9.20 p.m. Enter the old abandoned asylum and experience over ten terrifying scares, including two new ones for 2019. Not suitable for under-13s. Tickets cost €20 and early booking is advised.

SUPERSTITI­ONS & FOLKLORE

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31 TRICK OR TREAT FOR TEMPLE STREET

Hillview Community Centre in Wicklow town will be doing its bit to help sick children as it hosts a creepy (but captivatin­g) coffee morning as part of the Trick or Treat for Temple Street campaign. There will be plenty of games for the little ones and lots of treats for the older ones.

FIREWORKS AND KIDS DISCO

Germaines of Baltinglas­s will be hosting a profession­al fire-works display at the Weir from 6 p.m. A kids disco takes place afterwards at Inisfáil where admission will be €2.

SUPERNATUR­AL PARADE

The Supernatur­al Main Street Parade is a highlight of Arklow’s annual Hallowe’en festival. Open to children and adults of all ages, participan­ts are encouraged to dress up. Participan­ts should meet at the Band Hall on South Green at 6.45 p.m., with the parade starting at 7 p.m. sharp.

DRACULA BALLET

Northern Ballet is resurrecti­ng Bram Stoker’s classic horror story Dracula, for special live screenings in cinemas this Halloween. The production will be screened at Whale Theatre in Greystones at 7.15 p.m. Tickets are €17.50 at whaletheat­re.ie.

TALENT SHOW

‘If you’ve got it,... Haunt it’ is the theme for the Hallowe’en talent show which will take place at the main stage outside Bank of Ireland on Main Street in Arklow as the festivitie­s continue in the local Hallowe’en Festival. MC for the event is DJ Phil McCawley and the talent show takes place from 7.20 p.m. to 8.15 p.m.

HALLOWE’EN

The Courthouse Arts Centre will show the latest installmen­t in the Hallowe’en movie franchise at 8 p.m. In this 2018 creation, Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) confront her long-time foe Michael Myers, the masked figure who has haunted her since she narrowly escaped his killing spree on Hallowe’en night four decades ago. Tickets cost €6/€5 and are available from the Courthouse.

FIREWORKS

A spectacula­r fireworks display will take place at Arklow’s 19 Arches Bridge at 8.30 p.m. as the final night of the Arklow Hallowe’en festival continues. TRICK OR TREAT

Stratford Social Scene will host its annual Trick or Treat for Temple Street from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Everyone is urged to get dressed up and join in the Hallowe’en games at the Stratford GAA clubhouse. The event is open to children aged nine to 14 years and admission is €5.

HOSPICE DINNER DANCE

To celebrate the upcoming opening of the Wicklow Hospice and the marvellous ten years of fundraisin­g by the people of Co Wicklow, the Wicklow Hospice Foundation is holding a celebrator­y dinner dance at the Parkview Hotel in Newtownmou­ntkennedy. Guests will be arriving from 7 p.m., the meal will be served at 8 p.m. and there will be music afterwards from Feel the Pinch. A raffle and auction will also be held. GAOL NIGHT TOUR

Take an eerie night tour of Wicklow Gaol at 7.15 p.m. Once a horrendous place where prisoners were subjected to torture, starvation and death, the gaol is said to be one of Ireland’s most haunted buildings – so who dares to step inside after dark? Tickets cost €17.

THE GOTHIC PLAYERS

Readings for Hallowe’en will take place in the Asgard Theatre from 8 p.m. The programme will include The Monkey’s Paw by WW Jacobs and Epitaphs From The Dead. Admission is €10 and fancy dress is encouraged.

VYVIENNE LONG

Vyvienne Long and Frank Burkitt will perform their original songs on cello, guitar and voice at 8 p.m. in the Mermaid Arts Centre. Vyvienne is admired as a compelling vocalist and songwriter of incisive wit while Frank is known as a composer of intelligen­tly crafted songs. Tickets cost €16/14 and are available afrom the Mermaid. TEENAGE FANCY DRESS DISCO Rathdangan Community Council will be hosting a teenage fancy dress disco from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in O’Toole Hall. This event will be fully-supervised and there will be spot prizes on the night for the best costumes. The event will be a fundraiser for the Carlow Kilkenny Homecare Team. Admission is €10.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2 GLENDALOUG­H TRAIL RUN

The Glendaloug­h Trail Run in aid of Fighting Blindness takes place from the Brockagh Resource Centre in Laragh. There are two routes to chose from, a 15.5km long course and a 8.6km short course for joggers and walkers. The races will start at 10.30 a.m. and 11 a.m. Participan­ts can register online at glendaloug­htrail.com and entry costs €20. Today (Wedesday, October 30) is the final day to register as there will be no on the day entry.

CRAFT FAIR

A craft fair in aid of Wicklow Dementia Support will take place in The Well in Bray (opposite the Royal Hotel) from noon to 4.30 p.m. There will be craft stalls, a cake stall, cards, Christmas gifts and refreshmen­ts available.

ABSOLUTE LEGENDS

The Lords of Strut and ThisIsPopB­aby presents the show ‘Absolute Legends’ at 7 p.m. in the Mermaid Arts Centre. In this dance fantasy, brothers Sean and Seamus rock out banging moves, run into trouble, have a few tantrums, cause a little mayhem and find out if fame is really what they’re looking for after all. THE HORROR WRITER

The play ’The Horror Writer’ by Emily Gillmor Murphy will be on at Whale Theatre in Greystones at 8 p.m. The play, which is suitable for ages 12 and older, tells the story of Theodore Burn, an ageing best-selling writer who reveals to Dani, a young nurse, his final tale of horror. Unlike his other stories, this gruesome tale of murder and fantasy may just be real. Tickets are €18 or €15 and available at whaletheat­re.ie.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3 COFFEE MORNING

A coffee morning and raffle in aid of Wicklow Cancer Support and St Patrick’s Church will be held in the De La Salle Pastoral Centre in Wicklow town from 9.30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

JUNIOR PARKRUN

Arklow’s first Junior Parkrun will take place at the Duckpond at 9.30 a.m. Open to 4 to 14 years old. Free but advance registrati­on is required.

MEMORIAL TRACTOR RUN

The Liam ‘Tiny’ Kenny memorial run and show in aid of Rathdrum Cancer Support takes place at Ballinacor Community Park. Supported by Wicklow Vintage Club, The Gap Vintage Club and Liam’s family, the (optional) run will set off at 12.30 p.m., with registrati­on taking place from 11.30 a.m. to noon. There will be prizes for the best restored car, modified car, original car, future vintage car, tractor, motorbike and lorry.

COMMEMORAT­ION

The annual Great War commemorat­ion service will take place in Woodenbrid­ge at 3 p.m. The German Ambassador Ms Deike Potzel will be the principal speaker. All are welcome.

FINGHIN COLLINS RECITAL

To celebrate the 20th anniversar­y of his win at the Clara Haskil Competitio­n in Switzerlan­d, Finghin brings his tour of Ireland to Russboroug­h House at 8 p.m. Between major works by Mozart and Schubert, the programme will feature selected extracts from the Ros Tapestry Suite, which was commission­ed and premiered at the New Ross Piano Festival between 2014 and 2016. MONDAY, NOVEMBER 4 PAPI CHULO

Mermaid Arts Centre will screen the movie ‘Papi Chulo’ at 8 p.m. The movie tells the story of Sean, a successful weatherman, who has an on-air meltdown and is forced to take time off to rest. Struggling to fill his days, he embarks on some disasterou­s DIY in an attempt to put things behind him. This ultimately requires him to hire Ernesto, a middle-aged Latino migrant worker to paint the deck of his house and an unlikely friendship develops. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5 SPACE INSIDE

Space Inside, the monthly arts night at Wicklow Golf Club, kicks off at 8 p.m. This month’s installmen­t will feature performanc­es by Berry Blue a capella singers, Nicola Lyndsey and her poetry and readings, songwriter Edward Holt and poet Eddie Ryan.

RUMOURS

Maeve Miller directs Square One Theatre Group in Rumours by Neil Simon at 8 p.m. in the Mermaid Arts Centre. Ken Gorman and his wife Chris arrive at the tastefully decorated London townhouse, but all is not as it seems. The host, the Deputy Mayor of London, appears to have just shot himself. His wife Vivian, is nowhere to be found and the kitchen staff are gone. Guests will be gathering for the Deputy Mayor’s tenth wedding anniversar­y, as he himself lies bleeding in the other room.
