Kemple on fire in semi-final

Lucy helps Coláiste Bhríde to Senior ‘A’ decider

COLÁISTE BHRÍDE ST KEVIN’S CC 2-13 3-7

THE first semi-final of the Wicklow Post Primary Schools Senior football ‘A’ championsh­ip took place in Tinahely on Monday between the holders Coláiste Bhríde Carnew and St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin.

The first half was very evenly contested. After 17 minutes the sides were level at 1-2 each, the goals coming from Lucy Kemple of Coláiste Bhride and Ruth Birchall of St Kevin’s. Both sides added three points before half time to leave the score at the interval 1-5 each.

Both teams had their periods of ascendancy in the second half but with ten minutes remaining the score was 2-6 to 1-7 in favour of the Carnew school. At this stage Coláiste Bhríde hit top form and added six unanswered points.

However, St Kevin’s looked dangerous in breakaways and they added two late Ruth Birchall goals to set up an exciting finish. The Dunlavin school had some further chances but the Coláiste Bhríde defence held firm and they had three points to spare at the finish.

The winners were well served by Shona Byrne and Emma Tompkins in defence Keelan Stafford in midfield as well as the roving Eimear O’Brien and Lucy Kemple in attack.

Holly Wright excelled in the Dunlavin goal while Poppy Rose Cullen Dunne impressed in defence. Caitlin Kennedy did good work in midfield while Dolores Healy and the ever-dangerous Ruth Birchall were the pick of their attack.

St Kevin’s CC: Ruth Birchall 3-1, Dolores Healy 0-4, Mayah Doyle and Casey Kelly 0-1 each.

In the other semi-final which was played in Blessingto­n the home team Blessingto­n CC had a comfortabl­e 15-6 to 5-4 win over Gaelcholái­ste na Mara from Arklow.

GIRLS FOOTBALL SUPER 7S 16 teams took part in the Super 7s blitz in Ballinakil­l on Thursday in fine conditions.

After some close encounters the two teams from Coláiste BhrÍde Carnew and the TWO teams from St Kevin’s CC Dunlavin qualified for the semi-finals.

The final featured one team from each of these schools and it was St Kevin’s who came out on top by 1-4 to 1-0 thanks to an excellent display by their defence.

After the game the trophy was presented to the winning captain Mia Dunning.

Thanks to the County Board and Owen Doyle for providing the pitches which were in very good condition after all the recent rain.
