Dwyers far too strong for Carnew in league decider

- BRENDAN LAWRENCE

MICHAEL DWYERS CARNEW EMMETS 3-14 0-4

THE Michael Dwyers under-15 hurlers added the league title to their collection of crowns from 2019 when they waltzed to victory over Carnew Emmets in Ballinakill last week.

Having defeated North Wicklow Gaels in the ‘A’ championship final the previous Saturday, Michael Dwyers were always going to be favourites for this clash against the ‘B’ championship winners, Carnew, who defeated Bray Emmets in their decider the same day.

And while the Dwyers were put to the pin of their collars by North Wicklow Gaels, it was clear early on in this league final that Carnew Emmets were not going to trouble the west outfit to anywhere near the same extent with superb showings from Ciaran Coyne, Charlie Shamley, Austin Brennan, Rian Waters, James Boland, Sam Gough, Conor Manifold and Eoin Sheridan just to name a few helping to power the Dwyers to success.

The game was evenly contested in the opening quarter; an early, fortunate goal from Matt Miley setting Dwyers on their way but Carnew, although losing the majority of the rucks and one-on-one battles, were battling valiantly and had an early point on the board from talented midfielder Daniel Redmond.

Dwyers led by 1-7 to 0-4 at the break thanks to points from Eoin Sheridan, Rian Waters, Sam Gough (2), Jack O’Toole, Matt Miley and Conor Manifold with Daniel Redmond adding two further frees and Killian O’Keeffe completing their total for the day.

The fact that Carnew were unable to score for the entire second half tells the story of this game better than any other means. Dwyers were rampant and added goals from Jack O’Toole who caught superbly above Darragh Hayden before turning and lashing home past Will Molloy and from substitute Brian Richardson who collected a quality ball from David Peppard before firing home past Molloy who had an excellent game apart from an early error for the first goal.

The physical dominance of Sam Gough was a major boost for Dwyers as was the hurling of Austin Brennan, Rian Waters and James Boland.

An excellent victory for the Dwyers side. Plenty of good hurlers in the squad. If most can be kept at the game once the break between juvenile and adult hits, then a bright future awaits.
