NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

After the heavy rain all day on Friday it was unbelievable that we got any football played last weekend let alone getting all seven teams out on the pitch. There was loads of drama as most of the teams were in cup semi-final action. Our under-eights hosted Coolboy Rangers and at the end of an exciting series of games neither team could be separated on the scoreboard. Our under-nines played Rathnew away and lost out narrowly after that series of games. On the day among the players who starred were Alex Mackey, Elliott Garrett, Theo Messitt and Aidan Doyle. Our under-10 red team travelled to the Rocky Road in Wicklow to take on Rovers White team. John Turley scored both Newtown goals in a 3-2 defeat in a game that ebbed and flowed from end to end and our team left it all on the pitch on the day. Our under-10 Black team have made it through to the A3 Cup Final after a tremendous game at home to Glencormac United, that our team eventually won 3-2 after extra time. We were behind on two occasions but goals from David McCormack and Conor Shevlin restored parity. Aaron Nolan scored the winning goal in the second period of extra time to spark wild celebrations. On the day among the players who starred for the team were Aaron Nolan and Colin Healy. Our under-11s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) had to play a playoff game in the Future Cup with Shillelagh in Ashford to determine who finished first and second in the group. We trailed at half time 1-0 but with a few adjustments to the formation we came out strongly in the second half and goals from Aidan Heffernan and Ryan Collins put us ahead and it was a lead we didn’t relinquish, and we secured a home tie in the semi-finals. On the day Mikey Synnott, Max Roche and Aaron Roy were among the players who starred on the day. Our under-12s have made it through to the under-12 A2 Cup Final after a titanic battle at home to Ashford Rovers B There were no goals in the game of few chances, and it was on to a penalty shoot-out. Cormac Chance, Keira Farrelly, Scott McKenna, Brooklyn Doyle, PJ Duffy and Jake Robertson all dispatched their spot kicks and it was left to goalkeeper Ben Synnott to save Ashford’s sixth spot kick to send Newtown to the final of the JAKO Cup. Our under-13s (kindly sponsored by

Adrian Dunne Pharmacies) are definitely finishing the season on a high and they continued their recent good form with an impressive 3-1 home win over Avonmore B Aaron Cawley with two and Patrick Martin accounted for the Newtown goals. The team led 2-1 at the break and among the players who starred on the day were Iggy Szpilka, Paudie Gammell and Jack Coughlan.

Our ever-popular Development Squad continues every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. and now is in the community centre as the weather conditions deteriorate. All boys and girls from five to seven years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information. We are also on the lookout for a couple of more coaches to help with the group. If anyone, male or female, is interested, please contact our secretary at the contact details below. Our Last Man Standing Competition Week five fixtures will be for the weekend of Sat.2nd/Sun. November 3. The club would also like to extend their best wishes for a speedy recovery to two former coaches Scott Stuart and John Dalton, who both recently had a spell in hospital. We all hope you are both on the road to recovery and are out and about very soon. Four players from the club will celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Romain Beauge, Timothy Mariyasingarrayan and Daniel Cawley from the Development Squad and JV McCullagh-Kelly from the under-10s. Happy birthday to all four from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

On a sadder note the club extends its sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Johnny Mooney from Killadreenan, who sadly passed away last week. May he rest in peace.
