ALZHEIMER’S/ DEMENTIA SOCIETY

We meet every Friday at 11 a.m. in the Parkview Hotel Newtownmou­ntkennedy. It is an opportunit­y for family members and carers to bring their loved ones for a coffee and a chat. Its open to people in the surroundin­g areas towns and villages.

We welcome Ms Hayleigh Quinn and Mr Kevin O’Leary to our teaching staff.

Gemma and Sandy are with us on Tuesday as part of the Burns By Your Side Reading to Dogs Programme.

Swimming and Festina Lente Horse-riding programmes continue this week.

We are delighted to welcome Joan and Karen from Music Generation back to our school this week to work with children in first, second, third and fifth class.

Baby and Toddler Group is on every Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in our Junior School Hall.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Four of our teams saw action last weekend despite the gloomy weather conditions. It would have been five, but the opposition for our under-10s failed to show up.

Of the action that did take place our under-eights travelled to play Avonmore FC and enjoyed a series of games in the winter sunshine. On the day Jake O’Brien-Fitzsimons and Finn Heffernan were among the players who starred.

Our under-nines hosted Shillelagh and they both played out an excellent tussle over their series of games. On the day among the players who starred were Hugo Clayton, Theo Messitt and Erik Lis.

Our under-11s bowed out of the Future Cup at the semi-final at home to Ashford Rovers. In a very much below par display, Pat Carey scored the Newtown consolatio­n in a 4-1 defeat.

It was a rare defeat for the 12’s as they lost 3-2 in the shield at home to Arklow United.

The 12’s had led 2-0 at one stage thanks to Cathal O’Toole and a superb free kick from PJ Duffy. On the day Keira Farrelly, Rose Kelly Tynan and Jake Robertson were among the players who starred on the day. Our under-13s had no game.
