Kilaveney and Éire Óg to do battle in under-20 decider

SUNDAY at noon in the county grounds will see the two form teams in this year’s under-20 football championship go head to head in a shoot-out for the overall honours for 2019 when Kilaveney and Éire Óg Greystones meet in an eagerly anticipated decider.

Whether the Greystones men can match the power and talent of this Kilaveney side is going to be the biggest question of all, with the side consisting of mostly Tinahely players along with Annacurra’s Gearoid Murphy, Coolkenno’s Pauric Coleman Murray and Ruairi Tompkins, and Shillelagh/ Coolboy’s Caomhin Rawson and Diarmuid Lambert absolutely lighting up the group stages and semi-final when they dispatched a very useful Shamrocks side.

Whether or not Éire Óg, who defeated Blessington in their group before toppling AGB in the semi-final last weekend, can match or negate the talents of Matthew Ging (scored 2-7 in the semi-final) and Eoin Darcy will go a long way to deciding this battle but given what Kilaveney have done to Clan na Gael, St Kevin’s and Pearse Gaels in the group stages it looks as if they are damn near unstoppable.

But Peter O’Neill and Maurice Prendergast’s side will bring plenty of their own threat to the table in Aughrim on Sunday, make no mistake about it.

Footballers of the caliber of Shaun Cranley, Kieran Sheehy, Gavin O’Shea, Cillian Keane and Fintan O’Shea certainly won’t be traveling to the county grounds to make up the numbers and they would take immense pleasure in defeating Kilaveney to continue and compliment the wonderful work going on in Greystones at underage level.

The under-20 ‘B’ football championship semi-final that was called off due to a waterlogged pitch last weekend takes place on Sunday at 11.30am in Pearse’s Park with the winners going forward to face Blessington in the final in the very near future.
