Ninth national crown for deadly Daina!
ENNISKERRY BOXING CLUB’S Daina Moorehouse looked the picture of happiness and pride when her arm was raised by the referee to signal that she was the National Elite champion of Ireland for 2019 after a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of Mayo’s Sharon Sweeney in the 48kg decider at the National Stadium.
For a young and dedicated boxer, how much of a relief and what a sense of joy it must have been for all her work to have paid off and for her to have claimed yet another national crown and her first Senior title.
‘What can we say: elite champion 2019 we are so proud of you, Daina. All your hard work and dedication has paid off. What a year you have had, winning the elite 2019 championship on a 5-0 decisio. Daina also picked up the ‘Best Female Boxer’ award of the elite competition. Well done, Daina, you are the champ,’ was the reaction of the Enniskerry Boxing Club Facebook page shortly after the fight had ended.
Thankfully, all boxing fans in the Garden County were able to witness Daina’s superb skills for themselves with TG4 broadcasting the finals last Friday evening.
If you didn’t get the chance to tune in, what you missed was a very convincing and capable display by a young fighter with the world at her feet.
Sweeney posed quite a few problems early on but Moorehouse was majestic in how she handled the fight and by the third round the Mayo boxer was strangely offering herself to Daina’s fairly devastating left hand.
It’s been an amazing year for the Bray native who only recently turned 18 years of age.
She was crowned under-18 champion, took home a bronze medal from the European championship, won the Celtic Box Cup tournament, the Smithfield Box Cup, was crowned St Savious Fight Nihgt champion and won the National Senior Championships on her way to last weekend’s Elite competition.
She is a credit to the sport!
