ST KEVIN’S DUNLAVIN 4-9 GAELCHOLÁISTE NA MARA 0-1

THE Wicklow Junior girls football county semi-final took place on a cold wet Thursday morning between St.Kevins Community College and Gaelchloláiste na Mara in Dunlavin GAA grounds.

After referee Brian Foley threw in the ball, GCM dominated the early play. They pushed up the pitch in an instant heading straight for the first point of the game but missing the post by a few inches.

This is when Kevin’s realised GCM are getting down to business. A brilliant kick-out from Holly Wright in goals gave Kevin’s their kick start. Fine scores came from Dolores Healy and Caitlin Kenned in the first 10 minutes. The opening goal was scored beautifully into the bottom right corner from Dolores Healy’s left boot, St. Kevin’s were now on a roll, but GCM pushed hard and were very unfortunate not to score a few points in the first half.

Just before half time St. Kevin’s lost two players to injuries. Bryanna Reid was replaced by Abbie Cleary and shortly after Niamh Darker and was replaced by Gemma Carty. The whistle blew and it straight into the dug outs for both teams to arrange a plan for the second half. St. Kevin’s lead at half time was 3-4 to 0-0

Foley then resumed the second half with Kevin’s grasping the ball into the chest right from the throw in, to score the first point of the second half with great work from Mayah Doyle, Caitlin Kennedy, Katie Lipsett and Katie Halpin.

GCM’s backline was strong but Kevin’s powered through adding another three points from Dolores Healy and Claire Miley. GCM’s goalkeeper made some great saves, only to drive the ball up the field to help GCM get their first point of the game.

Both teams made changes of subs to change the game. GCM brought on some super subs to help in their defence. St. Kevin’s settled the game with a final goal scored by Claire Miley leaving the score reading 4-9 to 0-1.

St. Kevin’s now go onto to the final where they will meet the winners of Coláiste Bhríde Carnew and Blessington Community College.
