NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

As the season comes to a close and the weather conditions continues to deteriate, we still had a couple of teams in action last weekend.

Our 10’s reversed their game to play Ashford Rovers away and despite the damp conditions both teams played out an excellent game of football. The home side won out 5-3 in the end, but it was a game that could have gone either way. Leon O’Connor with two goals and a thumping header from Jack Barlow accounted for the Newtown goals. On the day indecision in defence led to a couple of the home teams’ games.

The under-11s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) travelled to Travers Insurance Park to take on Arklow Town under the nine-a-side format and the spoils were shared in a 1-1 draw. Ryan Collins scored the Newtown goal and Mikey Synnott, Aaron Roy and Frank Lang were among the players who starred. Good luck to Arklow Town their final next weekend.

Due to the weather conditions our under-13s (kindly sponsored by Adrian Dunne Pharmacy) ended up playing some Futsal against Spanish school SEK International from Greystones.

Some excellent skills were on display from both sides and the teams got a good workout.

Last Saturday morning in the Parkview Hotel the WDSL held their end of season awards presentation for all age groups (8’s-11’s) involved in the small sided games. Well done to all the boys and girls who received awards on the day. Also well done to all the team’s coaches and the parents for their support. It turned out to be a double celebration for our under-eights who were presented with a set of training tops kindly sponsored by Kearns Construction. Stephen and Paddy Kearns were on hand to do the official handover to the team on the day. Thank you, Kearns Construction, from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC for your kind sponsorship.

Our ever-popular Development Squad continues every Saturday morning from 10 a.m. till 11 a.m. and is in the community centre. All boys and girls from five to seven years are very welcome to attend and can contact any coach or committee member for further information. We are also on the lookout for a couple of more coaches to help with the group.

The following are the fixtures for the weekend Saturday, November 30,/Sunday, December 1.

Under-11s – Fixture to be confirmed; under-13s away to Carnew FC ko to be confirmed (Prov). Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change.

Week seven of our Last Man Standing competition saw nine players at the starting post. After the dust had settled that number is now down to just two players and they are Gus Fitzpatrick and Séamus O’Toole. Of the players who exited six had chosen Everton but they went down 2-0 at home to lowly Norwich City, while a solitary player went out after their selection Watford were demolished at home to Burnley. All selections must be with the secretary on or before 9 p.m. on the Thursday prior to the weekend fixtures. The Prize Pot will be €500. Thank you everyone for your continued support. Rules of the competition are available on request or are on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

We have four players from the club who will be celebrating a birthday in the coming week and they are Aaron O’Connor from the Development Squad, Finn Heffernan from the under-eights, JV McCullagh-Kelly from the under-10s and Rose Kelly Tynan from the under-12s. Happy birthday guys from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

On a sadder note the club extends their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Stephen Dempsey (Season Park) and Baby Mason Doonan Martin (Wolfe Tone Bray) who both sadly passed away last week. May they rest in peace.
