SPLAT BALL
The TY class had a ball when they visited Kilkenny and vented some frustration while splatballing. The sport is less of an impact sport and a little more gentile than paintballing. The class had a great time and then turned their attention to bubble football, which is exactly what it sounds like, football played in a giant bubble. The students were exhausted and who knows who the winners actually were but everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable day.
EUROPEAN BREAKFAST
The school is delighted to offer the European Ambassador Schools’ Program to TY students. The program is a network of schools across the EU raising awareness of European parliamentary democracy and citizenship values.
The module takes the TY students through the work of the EU and in order to raise awareness this year TYs held a European breakfast where students indulged in pain au chocolate and hot chocolate.
The event highlights the cultural similarities between our EU neighbours and shows the intricacies of the EU system. their socks off and came a very impressive second place in the Combined Event. Winning a European Silver Medal is such an amazing achievement for Adam, who is a dedicated and talented athlete.
In the Individual Competition, Adam was just outside the medals in fourth place. Although this is an excellent result, Adam is disappointed not to have finished in third, as he was a just heart breaking six points off the Bronze Medal. Even still, Adam managed to knock five seconds off his 800m and get another Personal Best in the Long Jump – an incredible achievement.
We are all so proud of Adam in Scoil Chonglais and we are over the moon with his performance. Adam is an inspiration to the rest of his peers, and everyone realises just how impressive this result is for Adam and the school.
Just to represent Ireland is awe inspiring, but to come away with a
Silver Medal is brilliant. Well done Adam, you are amazing.
SCIENCE WEEK ACTIVITIES
The theme of this year’s science week was Climate Action and increasing understanding of Climate Change. In Scoil Chonglais the second years specifically focused on how recycling affects climate change. They investigated their carbon footprint and designed their own items from recycled newspaper. Along with this they incorporated LGBTI+ week by making a rainbow of colours from a ‘traveling water’.
All first year students had a very educational and fun experience when they visited Explorium, National Sport and Science Centre. The students were given a live demo in the auditorium on global warming, next to a lightning show. After that they were given time to explore the science floor, which encompassed the illusion, the senses, the aquarium, the challenge sport science, force, science and water, mars landscape, VR moon, solar system and the TV news desk.
On leaving the campus the school was gifted two trees to plant in our school grounds. Many thanks to everyone involved and an enjoyable day was had by all.
TEAM HOPE
Well done to Ms Adams and her team of students who took part in the Team Hope Shoe Box Appeal. The boxes were enthusiastically filled with gifts from the students in Scoil Chonglais. This year the TEAM HOPE shoeboxes from Ireland will go to street children, orphans, children in hospital, poor families, victims of war or other needy situations in Eastern Europe and Africia.
LGBTI+ STAND UP WEEK
National Stand Up week is designed to promote understanding and awareness of the LGBTI+ community within schools. It is a time for second-level schools in Ireland to take a stand against homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying and show that they will offer safe and supportive places for LGBTI+ students.
In Scoil Chonglais there were lots of activities organised throughout the week across many subject areas including SPHE, Wellbeing and other curricular areas. Posters to raise awareness were also displayed around the school. The week ended with a Rainbow colours day where students from each year group were invited to wear a colour from the pride flag.
NON-UNIFORM DAY
In November Scoil Chonglais students took part in the West Wicklow Non-Uniform School Day to show their support for the Pool for West Wicklow Fundraising Campaign. Over 50 schools in the area including playschools, Montessori’s, Primary and Secondary Schools took part.
COMMUNITY AWARENESS
Transition Year students recently hosted speakers from local community groups; Catherine Moore from the Lalor Centre, Terri Kenny from Baltinglass Tidy Towns and Garda Brendan Duke. They spoke to the students about civic involvement, volunteering and disability awareness. In the coming weeks the students look forward to engaging with these Community Groups through their involvement in various activities.
Congratulations to the ‘Wicklow Schools Combined’ team who defeated ‘Dundalk Schools Combined’ recently. The college had a great representation on the team winning out on an impressive score line of 2-18 to 2-09. It is great to see such a strong representation from our school, players (Tom Moran, Tadhg Barrett, Shane Daly, Aaron Kennedy, Ryan Mulvey, Tadhg Miley, Jack Grace, Mikey O’Rourke) and management (Mr Deering). We wish a speedy recovery to Luka Harney, who is also a part of this squad. The next game in this competition will take place in January.
