Family’s close shave to help a good friend
GREYSTONES mum and son duo Sheila Kiernan and Cian Fairley have cold heads this week, having had their hair shaved off in solidarity with Cian’s friend Adam Kopec.
Both boys are 12 and in sixth class at St Kevin’s National School in Greystones.
Cian learned that Adam would lose his hair due to chemotherapy, so he and his mum decided to also have bare heads alongside Adam.
Sheila explained to Cian that the hair loss his friend would experience is due to the medicine which is to make him better, and his hair will grow back.
They set up a gofundme page, and contacted Chris Carroll at Grafton Barbers in Greystones, who was delighted to help, and carried out the two cuts last weekend.
There was a great atmosphere in the barbershop, with staff and customers all cheering Sheila and Cian on.
So far, they have raised approximately €3,500. Sheila said that they wanted to raise the money for Adam and his family to help ease the strain of medical bills and bills in general.
Only child Adam was in Poland last July with his parents Alexandra and Adam when he became unwell. He was diagnosed with severe a-plasstic anaemia.
He is transfusions-dependant and has recently had a bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy. His granny Hala recently arrived from Poland to help the family.
The class will be doing some more fundraising in January, with Cian’s twin brother Callum and some other classmates making a Youtube video to support Adam. Their other brothers Jack (14) and Sam (17) and dad Kenneth will also be finding ways to help.
‘We are all very proud of Cian,’ said Sheila.
