COLÁISTE BHRÍDE MOYNE CS (LD) 12 10

COLÁISTE BHRÍDE manager Myrrdin Davies has lauded the spirit and character that his side showed fend off a late surge from Moyne Community School in their 12-10 win in the Leinster Senior Development Shield final earlier this week.

First-half tries from Joe Conroy and George Hadden, the second being converted by Conroy, gave the Carnew school control of their Leinster final at the interval in Energia Park, with the score at 12-0.

However, their Longford opposition fought their way back into the game in the second-half, as two unconverted tries, the latter of which coming on 73 minutes, left the game poised at 12-10 going into the final few minutes.

The Wicklow side showed the fortitude and defensive steel to hang on in the closing stages to come away with the win and the Leinster Senior Development Shield.

Reflecting on the game, Davies said that his troops showed maturity and mental strength to come away with the triumph that has left the players elated.

‘The lads are on cloud nine. They’re absolutely delighted. It was quite obvious from the outset that both teams were up for the occasion,’ he said.

‘We showed that character and mental strength to hold out. There were some big tackles and some important turnovers in the Carnew 22 in the last two plays of the game. That really showed the strength in character that the Carnew boys had not to give in, especially after conceding two tries in the second-half.

‘It was a very tense time for all squad members, coaching staff, and supporters. You could see that everyone on the field was doing their very best to defend, and also to make sure that we get the winning result. From a coaching point of view, I am immensely proud of the team and the players for what they have achieved.

Looking back on the tumultuous path that his charges took to get to the Leinster final, Davies said that they had well earned the ecstatic smiles that they wore to school the very next day.

‘It was great to see the smiles on the lads’ faces when you saw them in school. You just get a sense of pride and enjoyment in seeing how much they enjoyed the occasion.

‘Not everyone can say that they have a Leinster winners medal.’
