Important victory for Wicklow seconds squad

WICKLOW’S seconds took on Suttonians in a reschedule­d Leinster League game at Ashtown Lane on Saurday.

Wicklow were determined to get the win and to get things back on track towards producing a strong a positive end to the league campaings in the run up to the two cup competitio­ns.

Wicklow started well and but were under the cosh in the early stages. Some strong defence allowed them to clear their lines and work their way upfield.

Wicklow were the first to make the breakthrou­gh when winger Adam Quinn touched down after an Eddie Downes intercepti­on and somegood work by both backs and forwards. Stephen Duffys conversion made it 7-0.

Five minutes later Wicklow were in again when Stephen Swan crashed over for the second of the day. Duffys conversion made it 14 -0 to Wicklow. Suttonians fought back but Wicklow defended well and went in at half-time with their 14-0 lead intact.

The second half started well with a Stephen Duffy penalty to make it 17-0. A disgruntle­d Suttonians were never going to lie down and the Dubliners broke through to score a well desrved try with twenty minutes remaining.

Wicklow were in no mood to concede again and with five minutes remaining young second row Jack McGrath broke through from a cheeky line out move. The big second row showed a clean pair of heels to the Scrambling Suttonians defence and galloped over for a memorable score. The conversion from Duffy grazed the upright and went wide but Wicklow had done enough to secure the morale-boosting win by 22-7.

Next weekend is a weekend off and the Leinster League restarts on Sunday, February 9, with a home fixture to Gorey.

The following week the firsts and seconds are away to Dundalk before the Provincial Towns Cup kicks off on March 1 away to Cill Dara RFC.
