HISTORY SOCIETY LECTURE

The opening Talk for the 2020 series of lectures took place recently in the Glenview Hotel for the members of the Kilmacanogue History Society. Titled ‘An historical tale concerning espionage in Ireland during WW2’, it turned out to be a fascinating evening and the large crowd who attended were not disappointed. At one point a lady spoke up from the audience and appeared very knowledgeable on the subject, and no wonder as she turned out to be the daughter of one of the German alleged spies. What had felt like a story from the distant past suddenly became very real.

Next up is the February entitled ‘Irish Arctic Explorers’ will be given by someone who has very personal experience of the Arctic and mountaineering in the most hostile environments in the world. Frank Nugent is an experienced mountaineer, explorer and expedition leader. Among his many accomplishments, he was deputy leader of the first successful Irish Everest Expedition. In 1997, he followed in the footsteps of Shackleton across the Island of South Georgia. He published ‘Seek the Frozen Lands – Irish Polar Explorers 1740 – 1922’ in 2003. The February Talk is in the Glenview Hotel on Tuesday, February 4, at 8 p.m. and everyone is welcome.

SOCCER ACTION

Glencormac United faced Avonmore on Sunday in a top of the Premier clash on Sunday. Already a battle is forming with the Glens, St Peter’s and Avonmore inn this Premier Battle but the Glens got ne over their Avonmore rivals with a 4-3 win on Sunday.

Josh O’Callaghan scored early for the Glens but the away side equalised. Then, a rare Simon Doyle left footed goal saw the glens go 2-1 up but a bad defensive mix up saw it go in 2-2 at the break.

Disaster struck from a corner in the second period which saw the away side go 2-3 up but, as on many times over the past few seasons, the man that is Nay Watters struck twice to seal a huge 4-3 win for the Glens.

Hard to pick an outstanding Glens player in this one as the Glens are not in top gear yet but Sam O’Callaghan was superb on the day. Another tough challenge coming up this Sunday afternoon away to Carnew. Best of luck, lads.
