John takes one step closer to a return to the Dail

DEPUTY JOHN BRADY was warmly received as he canvassed in Arklow on Monday last.

The Sinn Fein TD and his election team were in Churchview where they received a positive reception from many of the doors that open. The team moved through the estate efficientl­y and were all bundled up against the afternoon chill, with Deputy Brady sporting an ‘elect John Brady’ sticker on his coat.

The window for canvassing each day is tight and there is a lot of ground to cover in the constituen­cy. It’s the time of day when ‘many people are out’, as Deputy Brady explained.

However, many of those who were in were quick to promise the candidate their priority vote on Saturday.

One resident said her children will all cast their ballot for the party on Saturday. She told the candidate that she is thinking about doing the same for the first time, having been a lifelong supporter of another party.

Another resident said there is ‘a need for change’ as she promised to give him the number one spot on her ballot. She also said he will receive the priority vote of her extended family. A desire for change came up on the door-steps over and over again during last Monday afternoon canvass.

Later, a woman said she hadn’t made her mind up but described this election as a ‘big decision’ because ‘the country is in turmoil’.

Mr Brady asked her to consider ‘giving us a chance’.

A man returning home from the school run shook Deputy Brady’s hand and promised to keep the party in mind.

Half-way through the canvass, the weather turned, bringing drizzle and light showers. Moments later, the sun was splitting the sky even as the temperatur­es remain low.
