Arklow Boxing Club hosts super exhibition

- BRENDAN LAWRENCE

ARKLOW BOXING CLUB flung open its doors to clubs from Enniskerry, Wexford and Dublin for the annual tournament sponsored by the local branch of An Garda Síochána.

For the last 10 years the local Garda branch has thrown its support behind the venture and this year they were rewarded with a good crowd, some top quality boxing and a well organised event in the comfortable and wlecoming surrounds of the clubhouse on Emoclew Road.

The first bout of the night set the tone fomr the evening with home boxer Evan Fox standing toe to toe with Nathan Fortune of St Ibar’s/ St. Joseph’s in Wexford.

Both these young men gave everything in this entertaining battle with Evan’s height advantage doing him no harm whatsoever.

Next up was the first of two three-way clashes, this one featuring Arklow’s Alex White and Leo McCallion who faced the handy Rian Morris from St Ibar’s. Again, all three put in good performances.

The third clash was a feisty collision between Arklow’s Sean Fleming and Sean Rainford out of Sacre Couer in Enniscorthy. This was an evenly matched bout with some fine boxing throughout the three rounds.

Arklow’s Noah Hatty and Freddie Tennant from St Ibar’s in Wexford turned on the style for a humdinger of a bout in the fourth clash of the evening. Hatty was busy all through the rounds with Tennant proving a tough opponent from start to finish.

The second three-way tied was a belter from the very first bell with Arklow’s John Allen and Reese Doyle clashing with Adam Monaghan of St Ibar’s, with all three looking impressive.

The sixth bout was between Arklow’s Andrei Sofra and Na Fianna’s Dom Falinto in what turned out to be a good exhibition of long-range boxing.

Next up was Josh Browne from Arklow Boxing Club who took on Na Fianna’s John Rochford with fine skills shown by both boxers on the night.

Arklow’s Ross Leonard traded blows with Smithfield’s Michelle Denis in what was a very evenly matched contest.

Bout nine was a real classic, with Donnacha Murphy going toe to toe with Smithfield’s Dennis Smith. These two certainly produced the goods and are two excellent boxers.

The decent crowd at Arklow Boxing Club were treated to a very good fight in bout 10 when local boxer Philip Feokrytov showed his class against the tough Gaivi Anzlo from Smithfield.

Bout 11 saw Arklow’s Aaron Gannon mixing it up with Smithfield’s George Browne in a bout where some heavy shots were landed.

Arklow’s Molly Murnane made her debut against Smithfield’s Tracey Shield in a great bout that suggests that Molly will have

Gaivi Bendaliama and Arklow’s Philip Feokrytov.

plenty more great nights in the Arklow singlet.

Arklow’s Owen Moore scored well against Smithfield’s Arthur Field, landing solid rights to the head over the course of the three rounds.

Bout 14 saw Jamie Doyle of Arklow renewing rivalry with Tony McCall from Smithfield in what was another cracking contest between these two committed and focused boxers.

Talented Niamh Molloy from Arklow Boxing Club was in action against Irish champion Elissa O’Brien of E.B.A and it was a great performance by the Arklow dynamo.

Amber Byrne from Arklow looked impressive against Enniskerry’s Jade Smith who had Daina Moorehouse in her corner in what was another cracker of a tussle.

Bout 17 saw Tegan Farrell from Arklow in action against Amy O’Brien from Enniskerry and both girls were impressive.

The clash between Arklow’s Josh Whitmore and Smithfield’s Alex Murphy became a real grudge match. Both boys scored with hard punches in a fight where no love was lost.

Arklow Boxing Club would like to thank the following clubs: Smithfield, Enniskerry, St Ibar’s, Na Fianna, E.B.A, and Sacre Couer.

‘Also, our sincere thanks to An Garda Síochana Arklow. And also, to our supporters and parents who turned out on such a bad weather night. A special word of thanks to Brendan Lawrence of the Wicklow People for the photos and attendance also on such a bad night,’ said a club spokesperon.

Arklow Boxing Club’s next venture will take place on two weekends, Saturday and Sunday, February 29, and March 1, and Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, when Arklow host the Leinster B/G 4, J1 and J2 Championships. Weigh in is on Saturday, February 29, with boxing to commence afterwards.

It’s been held in Arklow BC and club officials are delighted to welcome all the clubs and officials.
