- By MYLES BUCHANAN

THERE is still time for local residents to sign up to Wicklow and District Lions Club’s bid to secure a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.

On St Patrick’s Day, the club are hoping that children and adults alike will join in ‘the largest gathering of people dressed as lions’ ever held in the world. Dogs dressed as lions are also welcome.

This event is receiving recognition around the globe thanks to Lions International as well as in Ireland. The International President, and now International Chairperson, Gudrun Yngvadottir has written to the members of Wicklow Lions showing her support for the event.

‘I congratulate you on your creative idea, your courage to do something new and different, to dream big and never give up. There are challenges, there are some obstacles on the way, but also new opportunities. I wish you well in reaching your goals, and very good luck and a great success in this and every project you do,’ she said.

She also thanked the members for their hard work and dedication, adding: ‘You can be proud of your club and the service you do, and you should share your success stories.’

Anyone wishing to take part in the world record attempt is advised to book their costume early for €15 as supplies are limited.

Leo the Lion officially launched the event Saturday in the Bridge Tavern. People will have a chance to register this Saturday at the Bridge Tavern from 11 a.m.

The record breaking attempt will take place on St Patrick’s Day with everyone gathering at Whitegates at 2 p.m.
