Women in the arts at the Whale Courthouse Arts Centre reveals varied programme

-

WHALE Theatre will celebrate International Women’s Day with its second ‘Women at the Whale’ event on Sunday, March 8, at 8 p.m.

This year, the Whale is partnering with Wicklow County Council’s literary event, ‘Way with Words’, to support even more women in the local arts community and to increase their storytelling footprint.

There will be a short reading and Q&A with author Lucy Sweeney Byrne, a Greystones native. Lucy has recently published her debut short story collection, ‘Paris Syndrome’, with Banshee Press, and will be interviewed by Fiona O’Rourke of the Irish Writers Centre.

Also confirmed is Kate Feeney, a semi-finalist in the Funny Women Competition 2019. Kate’s comedy explores human nature, and how completely irrational – but ultimately gas – we all are.

Other performers on the line-up include Bray harpist Rachel Duffy, mezzo-soprano Lorna Breen, the Zoryanna dance troupe and the wonderful Pitch Perfect Ladies Choir.

International Women’s Day is a global day, marking the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. Half of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Greystones Family Resource Centre.

The show will feature local talent, including female comedians, musicians, singers and poets.

Tickets are €15/€13 at whaletheatre.ie.

THE Courthouse Arts Centre has unveiled a packed programme for Spring/Summer 2020.

The Tinahely venue will host concerts, nights of comedy and performances by some of Ireland’s best-loved musicians.

Highlights in March include performances by Mary Coughlan and Leslie Dowdall, who will be joined on stage by some of her pupils from Crossbridge NS.

Local singer Luan Parle will bring her ‘Never Say Goodbye’ tour to the Courthouse for one night only on Friday, April 3.

Comedian Joanne McNally will perform her ‘Prosecco

Express’ show on May 23. The world around her is getting married and having children and streaming off to buy slow cooker crock pots and buggies. Joanne owns nothing and despite some comedic achievements, her mother is still trying to convince her to go back and study nursing.

Brian Kennedy and Donal Lunny will also perform at the Tinahely venue in June.

Meanwhile, the Courthouse’s popular film club will show films including the Oscar-winning ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollwood’ over the coming months.
