Limerick put five goals past Wicklow on a bad day for Burke’s charges

ALLIANZ NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 4

-

at Rathkeale 5-10 1-14

Limerick increased their lead even futher with another major from their centre back Iain Corbett.

With the Limerick defenders running from deep and constantly creating an overlap, the Wicklow defence were left chasing shadows. With scoring chances coming few and far between it was scores from frees that proved the only way of keeping the scoreboard moving for Wicklow.

Limerick were reduced down to 13 early in the second half with two black cards but Wicklow were unable to capitalise on the numerical advantage kicking some poor wides during this time.

With the second half reaching the midway point, Wicklow registered their first point from play with a long-range point from Darren Hayden to have the score line reading: Limerick 4-9, Wicklow 0-11.

Wicklow were working hard to try and break down the Limerick rear-guard but they were unable to get that badly needed goal to try and get them back into the game.

In fact, it turned out that the ball was to end up in the back of the Wicklow net, again by James O’Carroll.

Wicklow kept trying to the bitter end and were awarded with that goal when a shot by Gearoid Murphy from outside the 21 beat the keeper to put a gloss on the score line.

The scoring was brought to a close with a point from Tinahely man Patrick O’Rourke.

The win now puts Limerick in a comfortable position at the top of the table and the loss puts Wicklow in mid table and they are in need of a precious away win when they take to the air to take on London over in Ruislip. A win for the Wicklow lads would put them right back in the hunt, but they will be looking for their away form to improve.
