The ‘Glencormac Pure Mile’ initiative are running a table quiz in Plucks this Monday, March 2, at 8.30 p.m. Tables of four are €40 and all are welcome. Your support would be greatly appreciated.

The Pure Mile is a community organised initiative which supports litter picking and collection in the area which was started in 2019 and has worked well to date. This fundraiser is to fund the restoration of a local well, historical signage and information in the Glencormac/Rocky Valley and Kilcroney region.

RACE NIGHT FOR MNDA

As most of us all know, Patrick ‘Wackers’ Byrne was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease last March. Patrick has battled this disease bravely and received fantastic support from his family, friends and the community of Kilmacanogue and afar.

In a world where we like to give out about services and support, and we know that is the case for a lot, He has also received fantastic support from the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association of Ireland, who have recently provided the Paddy and his family with a van with wheelchair access and a battery powered wheelchair is pending.

Paddy would like to give something back to the association and with that in mind, he would like to invite you to a race night to be held in Plucks on Friday, March 27, with all proceeds raised going to this wonderful association. There will be eight Races on the night followed by the Auction Race.

Some very kind sponsors of each race have already come forward which include the Ricky Thomas Tarmacadam Chase for small mares under five foot, the O’Keefe Paving and Landscaping Gold Cup (for the well-groomed steeplechasers like Ray), The Sugarloaf Concrete Handicap, The Mr NCT Bray National, The East Coast Upholstery Maiden Handicap (for thoroughbreds that retired to soon like Alan Prunty).

To own/sponsor a horse is €20 and to buy a Jockey or be a trainer is €10 with prizes on offer for each race winner. This is always a great night’s entertainment with betting on your horse that night and it is hoped it will receive great support.

HISTORY SOCIETY LECTURE

Following last month’s exceptionally well attended and riveting talk given by Frank Nugent on Irish Arctic Explorers and the recent well attended AGM (incorporating a very interesting Talk from an historical point of view on ‘The Lemass Tapes’ by Ronan McGreevy), the next talk for society members is this Tuesday, March 3, at 8 p.m. in the Glenview Hotel.

The subject is ‘The Second Wave of Irish Feminism’ and the guest Speaker is Catriona Crowe – well known Archivist and Historian, who contributes regularly to the broadcast and print media on cultural and historical matters, she takes a look at Irish feminism in the 1960s – 1970s. Entry is €3 on the night and as always.

The society were delighted with the large turnout for AGM and some of the new committee members are pictured including Gerry Laverty (treasurer), Bat Masterson (secretary), Ronan McGreevy (Guest Speaker at AGM), Tommy O’Rourke (chairperson), Lucy Harmon (PRO). Best wishes to the new committee for a great 2020.

LADIES’ GAA

The first cup match for our Clan Na Gael ladies took place in Enniskerry on Friday evening where the girls took on Newtown in horrendous conditions. Having played with the wind in the first half, this advantage gave them a comfortable lead but the hard work continued in the second half as they battled against the driving wind and rain to ensure Newtown’s scoring chances were kept to a minimum and hold out for a good win.

A solid performance for the first match of the year from everybody with the full forward and full back lines particularly good on the night and impressive debuts by Anna Molloy and Ali Kavanagh. Final score was 11-04 to 08 points in favour of Clan Na Gael.

SOCCER ACTION

Sadly soccer pitches are a bit of a mess at present with the bad weather and the junior leagues kick off were postponed for a week. Fixtures secretary Paul Prendergast will be in touch with the various coaches this week as games will be over Saturday and Sunday. The new under-eights development team are away to Wicklow Rovers Green, to Newtown and we wish them well as they start out their junior football adventure, The under-nines are at home to Aughrim, The under-10s are at home to St Patrick’s, The under-11s are away to Roundwood, The under-12s are at home to Wicklow Rovers C, the under-13s are away to Avonmore and the under-15s are at home to Wicklow Rovers. Best of luck to everyone.
