Magic night for Wicklow
Miley and Treacy honoured at Star awards
TWO Co. Wicklow athletes were honoured at last weekend’s Juvenile Star Awards 2019 at The Bridge Hotel in Tullamore, Offaly, with Dunlavin’s Alan Miley also picking up the coveted Breda Synott Youth Nations Cup after being selected as the best male athlete at the Celtic Games.
Miley and former Ashford AC member Roisin Treacy were the two Co. Wicklow stars whose sporting exploits were celebrated at the well-attended event with both showing huge potential for the future in their respective disciplines.
Alan, a fifth-year student in St Kevin’s CC, is a member of St Laurence O’Toole’s AC in Carlow and is coached by Billy Delaney.
The talented athlete had an amazing season, winning 30 medals, 17 gold, three silver, ten of which were at provincial, five at national and five at interneational level. He was also selected to be the captain of the Irish team for the Leinster and Irish Schools Tailteann Games teams.
His proudest moments in 2019 were winning gold in the 400m hurdles at the youth Nations Cup and double gold at the Schools Combined Event.
Following on from his performances at the Youth Nations Cup that saw him return with two gold medals, Alan was also presented with the Breda Synott Youth Nations Cup for being best athlete at the Celtic Games. Interestingly, the late Breda Synott, who was from Arklow, was instrumental in setting up juvenile athletics in Ireland so it was fitting and heartening to see a Wicklow name inscribed on the cup.
Ashford’s Roisin Treacy, currently a fifth-year student in the Institute of Education in Leeson Street, Dublin, and now a member of Dundrum Souith Dublin AC, was awarded on the night in her absence for winning gold in the indoor 1,500, silver in the 2000m steeplechase and bronze in the 3,000.
