ST PATRICK’S DAY MEETING

A meeting of the Newtownmou­ntkennedy St Patrick’s Day parade will take place Wednesday, March 4, at 7.30 p.m. in Newtownmou­ntkennedy Community Centre. Everyone is welcome.

Organisers are looking for people to volunteer as stewards on parade day. Anyone, who may be able to help out in anyway should come along.

ALZHEIMER’S/ DEMENTIA SOCIETY

We meet every Friday at 11 a.m. in the Parkview Hotel Newtownmou­ntkennedy. It is an opportunit­y for family members and carers to bring their loved ones for a coffee and a chat. Its open to people in the surroundin­g areas towns and villages.

DISTRICT FORUM

MEN’S SHED AGM

A reconvened AGM of Newtown and Newcastle Men’s Shed saw some changes being voted in to the shed mostly in the way of management which should greatly reduced the workload on the executive committee going forward.

Elected officers for 2020 were the following, chairman: J Kelly. Secretary: D Carroll. Treasurer: M Kelly. PRO: J Byrne.

Sub committees with responsibi­lity for Shed Workshop: M Bunn. M Jordon. Gardening area and tunnel: P Hempenstal­l. J Gregory. Donated firewood distributi­on: P Doyle, J Gregory, N Sullivan, W Fitzpatric­k. Pop up shop: J Kelly.

All members are delighted to welcome back Tom D’eathe to his chair, and glad his cup is being filled once again. Welcome also to John Fagen, who has also returned to the fold.

Best wishes to valued member Michael Shelly, who had a short stay in hospital of late.

It is hoped to have upholstery classes in the shed in a few weeks time if interest is shown. Thanks to Noel the game of darts is now in the games room. Thanks to Sheila for her cupcakes.

GAA CLUB NEWS

Operation Transforma­tion walks are ongoing every Thursday, meeting at the club house at 7 p.m.

Our final walk will be on Thur March 19, not too late to join in for a lovely walk around the village.

Following on from this Newtown GAA have signed up for the *Irish Life Step Challenge* which starts on *March 16 and ends on April 12* We are looking for all members of the community to sign up to this challenge, whereby you clock up the steps in your own time by downloadin­g the *My Life App* to be in with a chance to help *Newtown Gaa* win a *€2,500* O’Neills voucher.

Newtown GAA have been selected to partake in the *Gaelic for Girls Initiative* which will commence on Saturday, March 14, at 10 a.m. at Newtown GAA pitch and run for an eight-week duration.

The G4G program is open to all girls between the ages of 8-12 years who are not currently playing Gaelic football or a member of a club. All participan­ts will receive a G4G jersey and will participat­e in a blitz at the end of the eight weeks with other clubs. Registrati­on forms have been handed out in the local schools and anyone wishing to find out more informatio­n can contact Margaret Synnott of Newtown LGFA Looking foward to seeing lots of new faces for a fun and enjoyable experience.

Newtown GAA will be holding a registrati­on evening on Monday, March 2, from 6.30 p.m. to 8 p.m. under-nines are starting their first training session that night also.

PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS

Enrolment forms for September 2020 are available from Fiona in the school office and on our website newtownpri­mary.ie.

Gemma and Sandy are with us on Tuesday as part of the Burns By Your Side Reading to Dogs Programme. Swimming, GAA, Basketball and Festina Lente Horse-riding programmes continue this week.

Music Generation continues on Wednesday and Friday. We are delighted to have drumming and yoga programmes starting in our school this week.

Baby and Toddler Group is on this Thursday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in our Junior School Hall.

Thank you to everyone for supporting our Springtime Draw this year. Another two draws will be held this week and winners will be posted in the post office and other outlets through the town.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

For some of our teams their

WDSL season got under way but for some unfortunat­ely ‘Storm Jorge’ won out.

Our under-9s travelled to take on a very strong Wicklow Rovers Green team and despite a tough encounter in tough playing conditions. 0ur team acquitted themselves very well. Tommy Ryan, Finn Heffernan and Riain Martin all got among the goals while Alana Gray and Reece Kearns were among the players who starred.

The under-11s got their season off to a flier with a 5-2 success away to Wicklow Rovers Blue. In blustery conditions Kaydin McMahon scored twice on his debut and Albie Chance, Leon O’Connor and Felix Geoghegan all scored one. On the day Lucas Dowdall and Alex Ryan were among the players who played well.

Likewise, our under-13s got off to a great start with a 4-0 away win over Greystones A Jake Robertson and Cathal O’Toole both scored twice while Scott McKenna, Dylan Dunleavy and Brooklyn Doyle all played well.

Weather permitting the following are the fixtures for the weekend of Saturday/Sunday, March 7/8: under-8s away to Arklow United ko TBC; under-9s at home to St Anthony’s Black ko Sunday at 10.30 a.m.; under-10s away to St Patrick’s ko TBC; under-11s at home to Rathnew Yellow ko Sunday at 11.30 a.m.; under-12s – Free Weekend; under-13s away to Shillelagh Utd ko TBC ; under-14s away to Sporting Greystones ko TBC (Fixtures and KO Times are subject to change)

The following are the training times for our teams going forward (all indoor): under-8s (players born 2012/2013) – Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; under-9s (players born 2011) – Tuesdays 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. ; under-10s (players born 2010) – Tuesdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; under-11s (players born in 2009) – Wednesdays 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.; under-12s (players born in 2008) – Thursdays 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.; under-13s (players born in 2007) – Thursdays 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; under-14s (players born in 2006) – Thursdays 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. (Training Times are subject to change)

We have two players from the club celebratin­g a birthday in the coming week and they are both from the under-11 team and they are Heidi Porter and Leon O’Connor. Happy birthday Heidi and Leon from everyone at Newtown Juniors FC.

Our latest Last Man Standing has its week two this coming weekend. From our 124 Players, who started in week one in pursuit of the €500 Prize Pot, we lost 28 Players. Week two fixtures will be for the weekend of Saturday the seventh-Monday, March 9. All selections for week two must be sent on or before 9 p.m. on Thursday, March 5. Rules of the competitio­n are on our Facebook and Twitter pages and are also available on request. Good luck to all Players and thank you everyone for your continued support.
