- By MYLES BUCHANAN

ST Patrick’s Day Parades in Arklow, Rathdrum and Aughrim have all been cancelled as fears over the coronavirus continue to spread.

Colm Moules of Arklow St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has confirmed that the annual proceedings which usually take place on March 17 will not take place this year.

‘Arklow St. Patrick’s Day Committee wish to announce that in light of advice received from public health officials and the cabinet earlier today, this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade will not now go ahead in Arklow.

‘This is in response to the Covid-19 outbreak and to protect all in our local community. We hope to be back next year bigger and better,’ said Mr Moules.

The Rathdrum St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee were due to hold a meeting on Tuesday night, but committee member Jimmy O’Shaughnessy was able to verify beforehand that events would be cancelled.

Speaking on Tuesday evening, He said: ‘We will meet tonight to discuss a few bits and pieces but the parade won’t be going ahead in the interest of public health and safety.

‘There is a Covid-19 reported not too far from here so we thought it was better to be safe. It’s a pity because this year’s parade was gearing up to be one of the best but we think we have made the right choice,’ said Mr O’Shaughnessy.

On Monday afternoon, the organisers of the parade planned for Aughrim announced proceedings had been cancelled following the advice of public health officials.

Avoca Active Retirement has cancelled a tea dance and performance by the Wicklow Man which was due to take place on March 15 at Avoca Community Hall.
