1 TOM WAITS TRIBUTE: The band Bone Machine will play the music of Tom Waits at the Hot Spot Music Club in Greystones on Friday, March 13, at 8 p.m. Tickets are €14 or €16 at thehotspot.ie. For the past year Irish audiences have witnessed an incendiary show performed by the band that captures the character and musical genius of Tom Waits. The world of Mr Waits is uniquely presented with a characteri­stic authority rarely harnessed by mere mortals within any single show to date. Bone Machine are a band of internatio­nally renowned touring and recording musicians that perform a firebrand, melancholi­c, and punk jazz set of Tom Waits songs. The band comprises Jack Healy on vocals and social strategy, Martin O’Malley on guitars and sonic sculpting, Jon O’Connell on bass and positive vibes and Adam Shapiro on drums and rhythmic karma. Each member of Bone Machine has performed in front of thousands of people at home and abroad over the past number of years in bands such as The Van Diemens, The Walls, Serious Mischief, The Fiddle Case and Raise the Rafters.

2 TRACTOR RUN: A vintage tractor and car run will take place in Tinahely on Sunday, March 15 in aid of South Wicklow Hospice Homecare. The runs starts at Walshe’s Ballinglen (Eircode: Y14 CK38) and finishes at Doyle’s Lounge, Ballindoyl­e. Registrati­on for the event starts at 12 p.m. Entry to the run is by donation. It is hoped that the local community will come out in force to support this worthwhile local cause. The South Wicklow Hospice Homecare was set up over 30 years ago by Pat Doran and other members of the local community. All of the money raised will go to support local families with transport and other expenses during their treatment.

3 BRAWL FOR THE HALL: Teachers, students and parents are all fighting to raise funds for the new sports hall at East Glendaloug­h School in Wicklow town. The ‘East Glendaloug­h School Brawl for the Hall’ boxing night will be taking place on Friday, March 13, in the Parkview Hotel in Newtownmou­ntkennedy and promises to be an exciting night. It opens at 7.30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.eventbrite.ie.

4 FILM SCREENING: On Sunday, March 15, at 7.30 p.m., Rathdrum Tidy Towns will show the film ‘A Terrible Beauty’ in the RDA Hall. Part of the film was made in Rathdrum in 1960. The film is also known by the title ‘Nightfight­ers’. Refreshmen­ts on the night. Entry €10, proceeds to go to the funding of the Rathdrum Tidy Towns projects. The movie stars Robert Mitchum, Anne Heywood, Dan O’Herily and Richard Harris and directed by Tay Garnett.

5 DEMENTIA FRIENDLY GALLERY TALK: Mermaid Arts Centre in Bray is holding a dementia friendly gallery talk for people living with dementia, their family, friends and carers. The talk will take place on Thursday, March 12 at11 a.m. and admission is free. This will be a light gallery talk exploring Susan Montgomery’s exhibition, followed by a cup of tea and coffee. Participan­ts can expect a seated tour of the gallery and an engaged discussion through exchange of ideas and thoughts. To book call the box office on 01 2724030.

6 LESLIE DOWDALL: The Courthouse Arts Centre in Tinahely will host a unique evening with one of Ireland’s favourite singers on Friday, March 13 at 8.30 p.m. Leslie Dowdall first came to prominence as the lead singer of In Tua Nua and has become one of the country’s leading singer-songwriter­s. The show will feature works from Leslie’s musical work as well as a traditiona­l aspect in collaborat­ion with ‘The Cowslips’. Leslie will also be joined onstage by some of her students from Crossbridg­e NS. Tickets cost €18/€16, To book, visit www.courthouse­arts.ie.

7 ARKLOW MUSIC FESTIVAL: The 51st Arklow Music Festival continues until Sunday, March 15. The event provides a platform for individual and group performers of all ages in music, speech, drama and creative writing. The competitio­n continues in venues around Arklow including St Mary’s College Hall, Arus Lorcain and the Arklow Bay Hotel. Businesses have also decorated their windows in a competitio­n organised by the Arklow Chamber of Commerce. This year’s prizewinne­rs’ concert will take place on Sunday, March 15 at 8 p.m. in St Mary’s College Halle. The evening will feature selected prizewinne­rs and the presentati­on of the overall awards. Entry is €5.
