Bray Emmets hosts 23 teams at busy football blitz

THE Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Wicklow Times Shield day one got off to a super start in Bray Emmets on Thursday, March 5.

This is the first round of the competitiv­e girls Gaelic blitz for this Cumann na mBunscol year.

All hands were on deck as 23 teams competed over 11 pitches in the group stages.

The games were played at a blistering pace supported by transition year students from local schools who have been trained as young referees.

At the end of the day results were tallied and sore legs were rested in preparatio­n for day two which will take place on Thursday, March 19.

Well done to the following schools who took part and who were compliment­ed by all in attendance for their skills and their manners and respect shown to opposing teams. We look forward to seeing you on day two.

Schools: Scoil Chualann, Kilcoole, Nuns Cross, St. Brigid’s Greystones, Gaelscoil Chill Mhantáin, St. Kevins Greystones, Newtown, Moneystown, St. Patrick’s Wicklow Town, St. Laurences Greystones, Greystones Educate Together, St. Fergals Bray, Gaelscoil Clocha Liath, St. Coen’s Rathnew, Ravenswell Bray and Ashford.

Boys’ Football Allianz Coughlan Cup Day 2:

Day two of the Allianz sponsored Cumann na mBunscol Coughlan Cup takes place on Thursday, March 12, in Bray Emmets GAA Grounds at 11.45am. It’s a nine-a-side tournament, no age limit, goalkeeper, with three points awarded for a score over the bar and one point awarded into the net (the emphasis on point scoring). Only two games to be played.

Rules: nine-a-side, goalkeeper, three points awarded for over the bar, one point awarded for under the bar.

Please let me know Gary McGillycud­dy via email/WhatsApp (086 8729927) by Tuesday, March 10, if your school will be in attendance and, if so, with how many teams you will be sending.

*Please note there will be a group photo at 11.50am prior to starting.

Girls’ Wicklow Times Shield Day 2:

March 19 at 11.45 a.m. in

Bray – nine-a-side. Teams will be in divisions from day one and this is a competitiv­e competitio­n. Full rules.

Two pupils per school may participat­e in each discipline - Boys’ and girls’ football, camogie and hurling.

Please note if a child has already played in Croke Park they cannot take part in the skills competitio­n. Participan­ts must be born on or after January 1, 2008.

Regional events will take place on the week of April 20 and those selected will go forward to a county selection day which will be held on the week of April 27 in Ballinakil­l.
