Positive weekend for Wicklow boxers
Leinster championships
THERE was plenty of top class boxing in Arklow Boxing Club over last two weekends where 110 bouts were decided on in the B/G 4 and B/G J1 and J2 Leinster championships.
Co. Wicklow were well represented in the finals on Sunday by boxers from Arklow, Enniskerry, Rathnew and Four Kings from Greystones and Fr Flanagan’s of Blessington.
Arklow had mixed fortunes, their three female boxers, Tegan Farrell, Amber Byrne and Molly Murnane were crowned Leinster champions on the day.
Kai Davis and Owen Moore exited at the semi-final stage last week, both narrowly beaten by the eventual champions.
Sean Fleming won his semi-final last week and boxed Brian Gilroy of Fr Flanagan’s in Sunday’s final.
The first two rounds were toe-totoe stuff, fairly even. Sean looked to have won the third but lost on a 3-2 split decision, obviously three of the judges gave Gilroy the first two rounds.
Philip Feokrytov didn’t box as well as he can after being ill last week and lost out on a 4-1 split decision to Nathan O’Hara from Paulstown.
Sean O’Doherty, who was making his debut, just wasn’t able for the constant attacking by Kayn McLaren from EastM and the referee stepped in to stop the contest.
Jamie Doyle tried his best but after taking a heavy onslaught from his opponent, Nogus Ivanauskas,
St David’s, in the first round, was retired at the end of the round.
Enniskerry boxing Club had three boxers in the finals; Cole Byrne winning well as expected, beating Evan Gillen from Clonard. Jade Smith won by rsc, beating Emma Millar, Enniscorthy, and Amy O’Brien dominated her contest, winning on a 4/1 split
Ben Lynch, G5 57kg champion Jade Smith, Darrell O’Brien and Paul O’Toole from Enniskerry Boxing Club. decision.
Wicklow’s newest club Four Kings from Greystones had two boxers in finals. Tadgh Allen was well beaten by the much more experienced David Drennan out of Paulstown. Conor Tierney was beaten by Rochford’s Camron Crichton.
Michael Cash from Rathnew
Boxing Club was beaten by Adam McKenna from Holy Family.
Leinster Council were delighted by the effort put into hosting the championships by Arklow Boxing Club and the club, who don’t do things by half, are delighted with the Trojan work put into it by the parents and club officials which made it so successful.
