Second win on the trot for Rathnew

-

Newtown 0-7 Rathnew 3-9

Rathnew notched up their second league win on the bounce when they accounted for Newtown away last Friday night on a scoreline of 3-9 to 0-7.

Having toppled Blessington at home the previous weekend Harry Murphy’s side were keen to keep within touching distance of the table toppers given that the result of the abandoned game with Tinahely is still very much up in the air with both clubs being brought to Ballinakill to appear in front of the CCC on Monday night last.

Goals from James Stafford, Warren Kavanagh and Jody Merrigan helped Rathnew to this sweet victory while Eddie Doyle and Nicky Mernagh were to the fore with seven points between them, four for Doyle and three for Mernagh.

Next up for the Village side will be the visit of the defending county champions St Patrick’s on Sunday, March 22 while the Magpies must make the trip to Blessington to take on a resurgent team under the management of Jonathan Daniels.

Tinahely 1-10 Blessington 1-5

A very productive second half for Jonathan Daniels’ Blessington helped them bounce back from their defeat to Rathnew last weekend with this morale-boosting 1-10 to 1-5 victory over Tinahely in Tinahely last weekend.

The Blues went in at the break trailing Alan Costello’s men by 1-4 to 0-4 but they emerged a rejuvenated outfit and pressed on to win by 1-10 to 1-5, addiong 1-6 to their own tally and limiting Tinahely to a single point from 30 minutes of football.

Blessington’s goal came from the boot of Stephen Carroll who along with Mickey O’Connor also bagged two points.

This will be a very disappointing defeat to Tinahely only a week after they escaped from Baltinglass with a one-point win.

Next for Blessington will be a wounded Newtown coming calling to the Kildare border on Sunday, March 22.

Baltinglass 3-9 Avondale 2-6

Brian Heaslip’s Baltinglass recovered very well from their defeat to Tinahely in their second league game of the season to send Avondale packing last Sunday morning on a scoreline of 3-9 to 2-6.

The home side had a strong wind at their backs in the opening half and built up a considerable 2-5 to 1-0 lead over the Dales and while Avondale would go on to score 1-6 in the second half Baltinglass were never going to be caught and they added 1-4 against the wind themselves.

Next up for Baltinglass is an away game to AGB in round four on Sunday, March 22, while Alan Costello will bring Tinahely to Rathdrum to face Avondale on the same day.
