FILM CLUB

The latest screening of the school’s film club took place this Wednesday, March 4, in the library, starting at 1.30. The film screened was ‘Captain Marvel’. The Film Club is free of charge.

WORLD BOOK DAY

To mark World Book Day the library organised the following events to mark the occasion: A ‘Drop Everything and Read’ event took place for all First and Second year students where students could read a book or an e-book on their Ipad for the last 20 minutes of class. A live ‘webcast’ was broadcast from London and featured well known writers giving writing workshops. Classes timetabled for the library were shown these workshops during the day.

MAKE A BOOK EXHIBITION

Nine Second year students attended the annual National Make a book exhibition in the offices of Dun Laoghaire County Council on Tuesday, March 3. Along with a number of other schools, the group displayed their project on climate change ‘There’s No Planet B’ which they have been working on since January. The students’ exhibit attracted a lot of attention and, on behalf of the group, Harri Armstrong volunteered to speak to the crowd about how the project came together over the last two months from the writing and production of the book, the making of the globe showing retreating ice sheets and the collection of plastics found on Wicklow’s beaches.

TY SPINC WALK

Transition Year students took on the challenge of completing the Spinc walk in Glendalough on Monday. March 2 Despite the weekend’s poor weather, they were graced with a beautiful spring day. They completed a total of 14km and did so in great spirits, despite the snow shower that helped cool us down towards the end of the walk. They also had the opportunity to witness some wildlife in the form of deer and goats up close. This was another walk completed as part of their training for their upcoming Gaisce hikes which take place later this month. Well done to all.

GRATITUDE JAR

The SPHE department have decided to dedicate the month of March to Wellbeing and have set out a plan of different activities aimed at all year groups, staff and the whole school community. We are doing this under the theme of ‘Marching Towards Our Wellbeing’ and using the Five Ways to Wellbeing as individual themes for each week in March.

Week One is ‘Take Notice’ during which we’d like all students and staff to stop for a moment and take notice of the things and people they have in their lives and can be grateful for. If they wish, they can write the things and people they are grateful for down on a piece of paper and drop it into the Gratitude Jar at the front office.

WELLBEING POSTER

All students are invited to enter our artwork poster competition for the month of March. Students can create an A4/A3 sized poster based on the theme of ‘Wellbeing and Positive Mental Health’. All entries are to be given to their SPHE teacher before Friday, March 27, The winning entry will be displayed around the school and in classrooms. Prizes for the top three entries.

TY THEATRE TRIP

Transition year students all thoroughly enjoyed the experience of going to the Theatre in Dublin on Tuesday, March 3. We were all delighted to see the familiar Ger Carey on a new venture. The standup comedian presented a debut of his new play, The Vanishing Gun. It was an enjoyable day for all involved and the staff complimented the students on their exemplary behaviour.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

The First and Second year Girls’ Basketball teams played their final matches of this season against local rivals Dominican College on Monday, March 2, at home. The First years had their best match yet, leading after the first quarter and making it extremely difficult for DCW players to get scores. They were unfortunate in the last quarter, conceding four baskets which just left them out of time but, for sure, they will be a team to watch going forward.

Next, the second years were up. In what was a tough match, the girls all played very well and managed to keep the score line low with some excellent defence but, on this occasion, it just wasn’t our day.

A big thank you to Charlie Cruise and Brandon O’Brien for all of their help this year with the scoreboard and setup and also to Amber Synnott for her coaching and guidance skills with the teams.

LEAGUE BASKETBALL

The CCM First and Second year girls’ teams had their second last match of the league against St Mary’s, Arklow. The First year battled hard. St Mary’s got ahead in the first quarter and, although CCM did very well in the second and third quarter, they couldn’t gain the lead. There were some great scores from Laura Fitzgerald, Caitlyn Keogh and Katie Geoghegan. In defence Keavney Doyle, Katie Russell and Kaitlyn Power all worked very well together.

The Second years went ahead right from the start. The early morning trainings paid off and the tactics they have learned really showed in how they played as a team. There were some great performances from Jessie Patten, Brooke Griffin, Alex Dickenson, Robyn Parkinson and Aibigal Delaney. Thanks to Amber Synnott for helping to coach and manage the team.
