Reel-ly good time at angling tryout
A group of young people visited Arklow last week to try their hand at angling.
Transition year students from James Street CBS in Dublin braved poor weather conditions on Monday last to have a go at shore angling on Arklow’s South Beach.
They were joined by members of the Arklow Town Team.
The fishing trip was a collaboration between the Dublin Angling Initiative, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Fishing Futures based in Wicklow, and the Irish Federation of Sea Anglers to allow young people to experience angling in a safe and supervised environment.
Students successfully caught fish on the day and enjoyed themselves, despite the wet and windy conditions.
The Arklow Town Team was delighted to show support for this event as part of an ongoing commitment to promote Arklow as an angling destination, in advance of the U16 and U21 World Shore Angling Championships, coming to Arklow in October.
Allison Ryder of Arklow Town Team said, ‘in advance of the Championships, we aim to run a series of events and collaborations with national angling organisations to benefit the local community. These including the ‘Something Fishy’ schools programme with Inland Fisheries Ireland and the CAST programme with IFSA. There is huge potential to engage kids with angling and for Arklow to be a key angling centre, attracting visitors from around the world.’
The event is one of a series is taking place ahead of the U16 and U21 World Shore Angling Championships due to be held in October.
