BASKETBALL

Thanks to their stellar performances over the last few weeks, the 1st year basketball team qualified to enter the knockout stages of their league.

On Monday they traveled to Enniscorthy to take on Coláiste Bride. The girls faced a tough challenge, coming up against the winners of the Southeast League. However, they didn’t let that rattle them, and they played superbly. Despite a slow start, Millie Leonard and Aisling Turner scored two baskets each in the second quarter to tie with Colaiste Bride at half time. The girls needed to perfect their defence against this tough team, and Maya Kelly and Niamh O’Neill were able to block some potential baskets.

Unfortunately, the day wasn’t to be ours, and despite two more baskets by Louise Flood and one from Hannah Lawless, the girls lost the match 23-14. Though they were disappointed to lose the game this week, the girls can still be proud to say they have placed second in their league. Well done 1st years!

The 2nd year team had an equally successful season making their way also to the quarter-final stages of the league. Their quarter-final match was an away fixture against Carnew who had not lost a game this year. It was their toughest match to date, and they gave it everything they had but were outperformed by a better team on the day. Well done to all the girls on a great team effort and to Ella O’Donovan who put in a super performance.

EQUESTRIAN NEWS

The Equestrian team were out competing on Sunday 8th at an event held by Gorey Community School at Barnadown Equestrian Centre in Gorey. Twelve schools competed against each other over a very technical course of fences. Only seven teams completed clear rounds to make it into the jump-off (speed round). Our four team members, Naoise O’Neill, Ella Mulvey, Jessica Phelan and Sarah Ní Bhraonain, took on this challenging course and earned their place in the jump-off with style. Two team members, Naoise O’Neill and Sarah Ní Bhraonain, represented the team in the jumpoff, and the girls came out with the fastest combined rounds with zero jumping faults which landed them in 1st place. Well done to the whole team for all their hard work.

A massive thank you to John Mulvey for training the girls and always accompanying the team to all their shows. Many thanks also to Neville Developments for sponsoring the gear.

CROSS COUNTRY FINALS

The management and staff at DCW would like to congratulate second-year student Lily Sheehy on her impressive performance in the All Ireland Cross Country finals. The competition took place on Saturday, March 7th, in Santry. At the start of the race, Lily was impeded by another falling athlete, but she remained calm and continued to run her race. She finished in 18th place, which was a fantastic achievement. An athlete to watch in the future!

FIRST YEAR HOCKEY

The first-year A hockey team had a strong season winning all their group matches comfortably and progressing to the quarter-final stage of the Leinster schools league.

The quarter-final game was an away fixture to Sutton Park School played on March 11th. It was a very tight game from the onset with little to choose between the two sides. Ava Martin and Sarah Ní Bhraoináin were super in defence keeping the ball away from keeper Molly O’Keefe for the first quarter of the game. Wicklow was first to score with a brilliant goal from right-wing Kirsty Lauder. The centremid, Hannah Lawless was next to score. As Wicklow tired a little Sutton came back strong scoring two goals to level the game just before half-time. The game remained at 2-2 throughout the second half of the match, and it was a sense of déja vu as the girls prepared for the penalty shuttle shoot out.

The senior hockey team had lost their quarter-final bid on the twelfth penalty just two weeks previously. Ava Martin, Sarah Ní Bhraoináin, Hannah Lawless, Kirsty Lauder and Maya Kelly were the brave players who stepped up to take the penalties. Unfortunately, the girls failed to score, and Sutton scored two. It was a hard way to be knocked out of the league, but the girls were so gracious in defeat. We are very proud of their achievements and their behaviour both on and off the pitch. Huge thanks to their coach Ms Hennessey for all her dedication throughout the season.

INTER-SCHOOLS QUIZ

The Lions Club Inte-rschools table quiz is an annual event in which the local schools in the county compete against each other in a bid to win €1000. This year the table quiz for 6th years took place on Tuesday, March 10th at CCM. There were three schools represented at it, DCW, CCM and Avondale. Each school had four teams of four students. The school with the highest combined score combined won the €1000 bursary for their school. The team with the highest individual score won €200.

The quiz consisted of 8 rounds, each containing ten questions. The questions were a mixture of general knowledge, picture, emoji and text abbreviation questions. Avondale and DCW switched the lead up until round 6. There was a late surge from CCM in the final two rounds, resulting in them taking the bursary prize back to their school. Well done. It was a very closely contested battle with DCW only losing by a point, CCM 206, DCW 205.

Thank you to the Lions Club for hosting such a great event. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thank you and well done to the DCW 6th years and to Amy Mates who helped us out at the very last minute.

TRANSITION YEAR TALK

On March 9th Bluezone Fitness instructor Cormac Byrne came into the school to talk to all the Transition Year students about the importance of a balanced diet, good sleep patterns and a healthy lifestyle.

He spoke to the girls about the importance of including all the food groups in the correct

Friday, March 7th marked the end of the weekdays in Fair-trade Fortnight. To mark this occasion, the junior students recalled what they learned last year from the Fair-trade event. At registration, all 1st, 2nd and 3rd-year students received a Fair-trade logo to colour and to name three Fair-trade products. Ms Martin collected all the correct entries and, randomly selected three for a prize. The prize winners were Dallas Porter O’Neill who won a box of Fair-trade Maltesers, Maria Romo who received a Fair-trade cotton shopping bag and Saoirse Mitchell who won a Fair-trade chocolate bar. A reminder for us all to be aware and shop for the Fair-trade products when we can.

150TH ANNIVERSARY

On Friday, May 22nd there will be a garden party held in the grounds of the school to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Dominican Campus. Holy Rosary School and Dominican College will be open for tours around the schools followed by afternoon tea in the grounds. If you have any old school photographs, we would love you to scan and email them to us at info@dcw.ie. It would be fantastic to have a photo montage of school events throughout the decades taking people on a trip down memory lane. We would greatly appreciate your help with this.
