SEACHTAIN NA GAEILGE
Avondale Community College celebrated Seachtain na Gaeilge last week. Each day, students were able to enter the ‘Ceist an Lae’ competition where they would answer a general knowledge question in Irish that was announced in morning registration. Mondays winner was Zach Cullen with Kevin Kinsella winning on Tuesday while Niamh Windsor won Wednesdays round. Well done to all students.
Students also took part in various activities in their classes, such as Tráth na gCeist and Gearrscannáin na Gaeilge. Transition Year students designed a ‘Balla Laochra’ showing the legends from GAA.
Trans 1 students took part in a Poc Fada on Thursday morning with all students given the opportunity to show their skills. Dylan Byrne was the eventual winner with Emma Byrne in second place. Dylan will now take on the winners from Trans 2 and 3 to be in with a chance of winning a sliotar signed by Wexford hurling star Conor McDonald. Thanks to the Irish department for such a fantastic week.
INTER SCHOOLS QUIZ
Well done to Sixth Year students, Rory McKenna, Lubna Azmat, Aoife Fahy, Enya Conroy, Ethan Fleming, Andrew Doyle, Francesco John Canosa, Tommy Cawley, Eamonn Peart, Uisneach Sheridan, Sean Fanning, Kyle Henry, Tarla Fanning, Ethan O’Neill, Daniel Hagan, Rory Shannon and James Hagan who participated in the Wicklow and District Lions Club Inter Schools Quiz in Wicklow last week.

Congratulations to the First Year girls basketball team who recently qualified for the South East semi final. They defeated Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew in a closely contested game. Well done girls!
ECOLOGY TRIP
Senior Cycle Biology students traveled to Glendalough last week to practice their ecology skills under the guidance of the Education Centre. This wonderful amenity on our doorstep is an excellent resource for our Leaving Certificate Biology classes. This annual trip is always enjoyed by students and teachers alike and many thanks to all involved in organizing and facilitating the trip.
On Tuesday our TY students enjoyed a Lego Workshop facilitated by Brick Artist Jessica Farrell and supported by Wicklow County Council Library Service. Our students worked in groups using Lego to solve a range of different challenges. Students took part in this workshop as part of Engineers
Week 2020. The benefits of Lego include promoting fine motor skills, encouraging team work, improving creativity, developing problem solving and mathematical thinking. Lego also improves communication on skills, develops persistence, improves self-esteem and develops lateral thinking and planning skills. Our students really enjoyed the workshops.
LADIES BASKETBALL
Many thanks to Mr Paul Carr from Basketball Ireland who visited our school recently to train our talented 1st and 2nd year basketball players. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all and they our players developed their basketball skills and attained some valuable new skills in the process. Well done to everyone involved and special thanks to Ms Ní Cuinnea and Ms Driver for organising and facilitating the training.
