Future bright as Lakeside set for opening fixture

WEST Wicklow outfit Lakeside were featuring strongly in 1994 and were part of the newly formed Dublin & District Ladies Soccer League that was formally unveiled this week 26 years ago.

There were some very recognisab­le names on the Lakeside teams at adult and underage.

The newly formed Dublin & District Ladies Soccer League kicks off this Monday, May 9, with Lakeside facing an away fixture against Kelly’s United in Drimnagh, at Intermedia­te level,’ read the article that appeared in the paper.

‘Following the amalgamati­on of the Leinster League and the Civil Service League, over 120 clubs will partake in the campaign. At Senior level the league will comprise of three Premier divisions and six Intermedia­te sections.

‘Lakeside will play in Division 1 of the Intermedia­te section, along with Newbridge Rovers, Marley Rangers, Belghan Blues, Booterstow­n, St. James’, Spartak

Dynamoes and Kelly’s United.

In a recent friendly Lakeside scored a deserved 2-0 victory over the Intermedia­te Cup winners of last season, Shankill United, with goals from Carmel Craul and Gillian Kinsella. Other solid displays came from Jenny Murphy, Sabrina Murphy, Rosaline Long, Deirdre Kavanagh and goalie, Celine Teague.

At underage level, Lakeside have entered the under-14 league which will be played on Thursday evenings. In the under-16 and 18 age groups, Lakeside will only take part in the Cup competitio­ns, at league and All-Ireland level.

‘With the underage section, along with St. Catherine’s Youth Club, Leixlip, Luca, Kells, Rowlagh Celtic, Clonard Celtic, Grange Abbey and Whitestown United, this particular section promises to be a most competitiv­e one, involving all high-quality teams.

‘On Friday last Lakeside played under-16 league favourites, Kilnamanag­h, in a pre-season friendly at Blessingto­n, which proved an absolute thriller, ending in a 1-1 draw. Rosaline Long capped a fine display with the Lakeside goal, with other fine displays from Caroline Quinn, Sandra Breen, substitute Niamh Craul and emergency goalie Sarah Boylan.
