Glenview rule roost Lakeside dish out a drubbing

Bray side see off Gorey Rangers to claim title

- PREMIER DIVISION

GLENVIEW GOREY RANGERS 7 3

GLENVIEW finally clinched the Premier Division title at the People’s Park, this week in 1990 when they accounted for Gorey Rangers in a thrilling contest which produced no fewer than 10 goals.

The dominant force in Wicklow League football in the early seventies, Glenview then folded in 1975, but were reformed in 1988. This was a fantastic triumph for the Darglesiders in only their second season back in the Wicklow League.

‘They opened their account in the 11th minute with Andy McEvoy turning sharply before shooting into the corner of the net from 15 yards,’ read the report from that week’s Wicklow and Bray People newspapers.

‘Gorey were desperately unlucky not to equalise in the 25th minute when Danny Whitty’s effort rolled along the goal line without going over and defender, Tom O’Brien, got back to clear the danger.

‘A minute later, the homesters were 2-0 up as Dave Egan availed of a disastrous mix-up between Gorey ’keeper Edward ‘Bear’ Kennedy and left back Stephen Kennedy to tap the ball into the empty net.

‘Glenview went further in front in the 33rd minute when Andy McEvoy was taken down in the penalty area and Chris ‘Kit’ O’Neill scored from the spot.

‘But then Gorey staged a revival with two goals either side of half-time.

‘Glenview restored their twogoal advantage in the 62nd minute when Andy McEvoy followed up to score after Brian McEvoy’s effort had been parried by Kennedy. But disaster struck for the Bray side two minutes later as Declan Harris scored a bizarre own goal, lobbing

Doyle from 20 yards.

‘However, it was the home team who finished on a high note with three goals in the last 12 minutes. Chris O’Neill added his second penalty with Brian McEvoy and Jonathan O’Neill also hitting the rigging.

‘Glenview: Billy Doyle, Dave Murphy, Stephen Harris, Declan Harris, Tom O’Brien, Andy McEvoy, Sean Stephens, Jonathan O’Neill, Brian McEvoy, Chris ‘Kit’ O’Neill, Dave Egan. Subs: Barney Flynn, Damien O’Neill and Alan Mooney (not used).

LAKESIDE RATHFARNHAM 3 0

LAKESIDE girls soccer team issued a stern warning to all concerned in the premier division, that they intended to be involved in the shake up for honours, when they dished out a 3-0 drubbing to hot favourites, Rathfarnham United, in Blessington this week in 1990.

Rathfarnham recently finished runners-up in a major European tournament in Frnace, but were outplayed in this game. The first half which ended scoreless was best remembered for a Nikki O’Neill effort which crashed off the crossbar.

The second half turned out to be a personal triumph for Laura Wall as she scored a devastating hat-trick.

Tracey Doyle in the Lakeside goal continues to impress with every outing, but overall this was a performance from 11 stars.

In their previous outing Lakeside snatched an away point, after a 2-2 draw with Brighton Celtic, with goals from Mella Reynolds and Martina Colville who put through her own net, while under pressure from Lauara Wall.

Lakeside: Tracey Doyle, Mary Clarke, Maire Boran, Ann Marie Zeller, Molly Ryan, Teasy Maguire, Nikki O’Neill, Deirdre Boylan, Melia Reynolds, Laura Wall, Ita O’Neill. Subs: Sally Fleming, Eimear Zeller.
