Cars stolen to order
May 2008
THERE IS an increasing problem with cars being stolen to order in the Greystones area, the joint Town Council and Policing Committee was told last week
However public order offences are less common in Grestones than in Bray.
It was Deputy Mayor and councillor George Jones who put the question to the Greystones garda representatives.
Statistics for the past quarter show that public order does not feature as high in Greystones as it does in the neighbouring town of Bray
Gardai believe that this is sue to there not being a nighclub in Greystones.
However, with the extension of the M50 to Greystones, the number of cars being stolen has increased.
It is mainly high-end type cars that are been taken and this is due to the ‘stolen to order’ phenomenon.
With the M50 thieves from outside the town now have easier access to these cars and a quick getaway.
Currently, Gardaí have intelligence monitoring the situation. If a theft occurs, Gardaí are in a position where they can all access roads to prevent the thieves leaving the town.
Greystones Town Council were told that in a matter of minutes a series of ringed checkpoints could be set up to lock down the M50, N11 and other roads accessible to Greystones.
Through monitoring controls Gardaí also aim to stop car thieves before they enter the town through these lock downs and they will continue to build on the intelligence they have to tighten these measures.
