Volkswagen is tops with Wicklow motorists and most popular motorcycle­s are Honda Recycling centres

A TOTAL of 70,619 private vehicles were licensed in County Wicklow last year according to the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport’s annual bulletin of vehicle and driver statistics.

Volkswagen remains the most popular make among motorists from the Garden County, accounting for 9,052 vehicles. The next most popular is Toyota with 7,011, followed by Ford with 6,542 vehicles.

The number of private cars by make in the county include 117 Alfa Romeo, 3,630 Audi, 3,101 BMW, 225 Chevrolet, 36 Chrsyler, 1,116 Citroen, 718 Dacia, 76 Daihatsu, 1,218 Fiat, 1,698 Honda, 4,411 Hyundai, 295 Jaguar, 46 Jeep, 2,311 Kia, 785 Landrover, 437 Lexus, 1,375 Mazda, 2,357 Mercedes Benz, 701 Mini, 766 Mitsubishi, 5,692 Nissan, 3,074 Opel, 2,590 Peugeot, 72 Porsche, 2,822 Renault, 55 Rover, 234 Saab, 1,325 SEAT, 3,282 Skoda, 31 Smart, 28 Ssangyong, 287 Subaru, 1,064 Suzuki, 33 Tesla, 733 Vauxhall, 1,180 Volvo, 85 other makes and one make unspecifie­d.

There was a total of 10,180 goods vehicles licensed in Wicklow last year. Ford was the most popular make with 1,757 goods vehicles, followed by Toyota with 1,555 and Volkswagen with 1,168.

1,585 tractors were registered, and the most popular makes were John Deere (290), Massey Ferguson (277), New Holland (277) and Ford (170),

There were 1,724 motorcycle­s based in Wicklow during 2019. The most popular motorcycle­s were Honda (534), Yamaha (246) and Suzuki (240).

3,193 vehicles were licensed for the first time last year, which was down on the previous four years.

The total number of licensed vehicles recorded on Irish roads by December 31 2019 was 2,805,839.

This represents an increase of 88,117 vehicles (3.24 per cent) on the previous year.

The main components of the vehicle fleet include 2,174,779 private cars, 366,760 goods vehicles, 75,863 agricultur­al tractors, 50,447 vintage vehicles and 42,492 motorcycle­s.

NONE of the recycling centres throughout the county will be accepting clothes for the time being because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Wicklow County Council has also issued a warning that no bags should be dumped beside these clothes bins. Paint is no longer being accepted in Arklow.

Paint is currently still being accepted in Bray but the situation will be continuous­ly reviewed.

Monthly recycling collection­s in West Wicklow are not taking place at present due to Covid-19. However, Rampere Recycling Centre in Baltinglas­s is still open and can accept all your recyclable­s.

Some of the opening hours for certain centres have been amended.

Bray Recycling Centre hours currently are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.

Avoca Recycling Centre hours are currently are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.. on Tuesday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. on Saturdays.

Arklow, Rampere and Wicklow Recycling Centre hours remain as normal.
