Four Kings coach skips for Gavin Glynn Foundation
FOUR KINGS BOXING CLUB head coach Stephen Coughlan is just over €100 away from his adjusted target of €1,500 that he hopes to raise for the Gavin Glynn Foundation from his skipping fundraiser last Friday afternoon in St. Patrick’s Hall in Kilcoole. the death of his fellow Four Kings coach Robbie Doyle’s nephew Nathan Flynn to cancer in 2019.
This tragic event for the family of a young Bray man who became known as Nathan the Brave inspired Coughlan to try and raise funds for the Gavin Glynn Foundation and on Friday he pushed himself hard in St. Patrick’s Hall while broadcasting the event on Facebook Live.
‘Robbie Doyle is one of the coaches in the club and one of his nephew’s, Nathan, Nathan the Brave we call him, unfortunately he passed away this day last year from cancer. It was and still is an awful time for his family to be going through, and there are other families going through it now and the Gavin Glynn Foundation do great work,’ Stephen Coughlan told the Bray and Wicklow People newspapers.
‘And closer to home, a friend of my family, her one-year-old daughter was helped by the Gavin Glynn Foundation. She was supposed to have a flight to America but due to the travel restriction she was unable to go and the flight got cancelled. That was the last hope. Eventually, through the Gavin Glynn Foundation, she got a flight to London and managed to get treatment over there.
‘That’s one of the small things, well, a huge thing, but one of the many things that they do for children like that.
Couglan’s skipping on the day was very impressive as he crossed and skipped backwards while picking up and dropping the pace at regular intervals during every three-minute round.
The Bray native runs Four Kings out of the St. Patrick’s Hall. He started the club less than three years ago and they were enjoying huge success up until the Covid-19 pandemic.
‘It’s going to be tough but I’ve been skipping since I started boxing a long, long time ago,’ he said just before starting his first round.
‘I’m not as fit as I could be but lets see how it goes. It’s nothing compared to what Nathan the Brave went through a year ago, and what his family are still going through. This is for all of them,’ he added.
