ST. CRONAN’S GLENEALY

the Glenealy side.

The clash was described as an ‘excellent game of hurling from two evenly matched teams’ in that week’s Wicklow People.

‘St. Cronan’s took the lead halfway through the first half with a goal from Luke Connolly. This was followed shortly afterwards by a goal from James Talbot who netted having received an excellent pass from John Henderson,’ read the report.

‘Glenealy had lots of opportunities but were denied by Peter O’Reilly in goal and by the excellent defending of Darragh Maloney in particular.

‘At half-time St. Cronan’s led by two goals. ‘Glenealy started the second half in great style with two quick goals from John Manley to level the match. However, John Henderson scored an excellent point to put the Bray side back in front but the lead was short lived as Ronan Kavanagh replied with a quick goal to put Glenealy in front for the first time in the game.

‘It was at this stage that St. Cronan’s hit their purple patch with three quick goals to give them a commanding lead but the game was not yet over. Glenealy were determined to battle to the end and were rewarded with two more goals.

‘But this was not enough to prevent St. Cronan’s from claiming their first ever Murphy Cup success on a scoreline of 6-1 to 5-0.

‘The St. Conan’s heroes were: Peter O’Reilly, Luke O’Reilly, James Talbot (1-0), Ashley Culliton, Luke Connolly (1-0), Darragh Maloney, John Henderson (2-1), Mikey Lee (2-0), Lee Brandon, Daniel Connolly, Adam Conway, Philip Haughton.
