Nicky gets the chop for charity
GREYSTONES man Nicky Cox has raised €3,000 for Open Door, by having his long hair shorn off.
‘It’s been a while since the last time I got my hair cut, so I wanted to make this haircut matter,’ said Nicky, whose mane was three years in the growing!
‘As we know during the coronavirus pandemic this has affected several charities in terms of fundraising, so I decided to cut my hair for charity.’
His mother Suzanne is the fundraising co-ordinator for Open Door, and his grandmother Mary Hackett was one of the founders of the day care centre for people with physical disabilities, so the cause was extremely close to Nicky’s heart.
He and his siblings have always been involved with helping out with fundraising and activities at the centre, which is located on Bray’s Vevay Road. ‘Currently the centre is closed and several of the major fund raising activities planned for the year have had to be cancelled; mid-summer lunch, open golf classic, and the VHI Women’s Mini Marathon, along with several other collection activities like bag packs and raffles,’ said Nicky.
‘Hopefully the funds raised through this will help recover some of the funds lost from these cancellations.’
The cutting of the hair itself was quite a task as Nicky’s locks were flowing. It was done in a number of stages over several days, with the final clipping taking place on bank holiday Monday, June 1.
The hair removed will be donated to the Rapunzel Foundation, a charity which helps people with alopecia by turning real hair into wigs.
Nicky had an initial fundraising target of €1,000 so far exceeded expectations with the amount raised.
The donation page remains open until the end of June at idonate.ie, under ‘Nicky Cox’s Page’.
Open Door provides facilities and activities for adults with physical disabilities.
