Mighty Marc says ‘thanks’ Lennon raised over €5,000

- Sports Reporter

AFTER successfully completing a charity endurance challenge in aid of Purple House, Bray Emmets’ Marc Lennon has thanked all of those who helped him raise over €5,000 for the cancer support organisation.

On Sunday, the 25-year-old ran the gauntlet by taking 500 shots at goal (250 in football, 250 in hurling) as well as a 42km run. After just over three hours and buoyed on by total donations of €5,490, Marc had achieved his goal, and was quick to express gratitude to those who helped him along the way.

‘Cancer is something that touches many families, really. Purple House is a great charity that does super work around our area, especially. I said that I would give myself a challenge and raise a few bob for a great charity at the same time.

‘I didn’t think we’d make nearly as much money for Purple House, and then between the texts and support on the day, it was unreal, to be honest.

To give himself the best chance of completing the task at hand, Marc split the objectives up over the course of Saturday morning, starting with 150 football shots, then a 12km run, then 100 football shots, 10km, 150 hurling shots, 10km, 100 hurling shots, and finally, the last 10km.

He said that the day went very well, although it was that final sprint that he found the toughest.

‘Probably the hardest part would have been the last 10km. The weekend before, I started with a 15km and a 25km so I knew that I had that in the legs, and then the last 10km were very tough.’

Marc is one of many athletes who have embarked on charitable causes since COVID-19 lockdown measures were put in place earlier this year, as people continue to use their spare time to support those more vulnerable.
