ARKLOW VS ST. DAVID’S 3 0

O’Neill, Nathan Carr and John O’Sullivan launched frequent attacks on the St. David’s goal.

‘They were rewarded after only ten minutes when, following a corner, Cormac Byrne headed a goal from close range.

‘St. David’s were not to give up easily however, and Arklow could not add to their score in the first half. Time and again Glen Wall, at the time for St. David’s, foiled the Arklow forwards.

Mick Byrne had a good chance for Arklow, but it was Brian Honan for Greystones who came closest to scoring, when his shot was cleared off the line by Arklow’s James Snell.

‘St. David’s caused Arklow some problems early in the second half when Glen Wall and Gary Redmond moved to midfield. Mick Morgan, however, was in great form at the back for Arklow and he constantly put an end to the Greystones’ attacks.

‘Arklow soon took control again and exerted great pressure in their search for a second goal.

‘James O’Sullivan came close with a good shot, but eventually it was his brother John who scored the vital goal, with a shot that took a cruel deflection off a Greystones back before finishing in the net.

‘Five minutes later, Cormac Byrne secured the victory with the best goal of the game – a great shot from long-range hitting the top corner of the goal.

St. David’s mounted a late rally, with good work from Stuart Byrne and Jonathan Hynes, who changed from goalkeeper to forward in the second half, but a great save from Arklow ’keeper Ronan Doyle prevented them from scoring a late goal.

Others to shine for the winners were Dermot Ryan and Clive Byrne, who made many fine attacking runs from the back for his side.
