Carty storms to historic double

PLAYING superb golf and allowing for dropped shots amongst the last five holes, past Arklow Golf Club President Tom Carty stormed to a historic double when taking this year’s President’s Prize (Fred Kaye) this week in 1994.

His winning score of 43 points elevated Tom to equaling the course record and also set a record of winning the President’s Prize in consecutiv­e years.

President Fred Kaye had reason to be a proud man at presentati­on time when it was declared that over 200 golfers had fought gallantly for his beautiful array of prizes.

None fought more courageous­ly than Jim Collins, Brendan Timmons, Leo Shannon, Pat Hempenstal­l, Tommy Dowling and youthful Chris Doyle, all of whom figured in major positions for prizes.

Over a hectic weekend at the club, the team of Mccormack, Walsh, Synnott and Mullins just got home to win the Saturday annual Club Scramble while the partnershi­p of Mr and Mrs Noel O’Toole brought off a sensationa­l double in winning both the Kavanagh Open Mixed Foursomes at Arklow on Bank Holiday Monday and the Open Mixed Foursomes at Bray the previous day.

ARKLOW VOCATIONAL SCHOOL enjoyed a superb end to the season with a 3-0 victory over St. David’s of Greystones in the final of the Wicklow-Wexford Schools under-15 cup competitio­n.

The win seen Arklow VS hold on to the cup which they had won for the first time the year previous and it concluded a very successful season for the Arklow school after they had already won the under-16 league and finished runners-up in the under-13 and 14 leagues.
