Emmett Celtic power to league and cup double

-

EMMETT CELTIC clinched the Division 2 title in great style when they hammered Newtown United 4-0 in their final league game of the season at Newtown this week in 1994.

Needing just a single point to pip their near neighbours, Carnew, for the title, ’Emmetts took the lead after 10 minutes when Claude Dagge volleyed the ball home from 12 yards following a well-flighted free-kick from PJ Nolan.

Declan Nolan scored twice before the interval, his first being a header and his second being a great individual effort. Nolan completed his hat-trick in the second half, heading in a corner from Claude Dagge.

John and Declan Nolan and Claude Dagge were outstanding for Emmett Celtic who won their last 13 matches.

This was some achievement especially when one considers that seven of their last eight games were away from home and they played their last five matches without top scorer Keith Byrne, the 33-goal striker missing out through injury.

The team also claimed the Thomas Scott Cup title, scored 106 goals, conceded just 33, harvested 46 points, 22 wins, two draws and two losses from 26 league games.

The Nolan clan certainly made a very significant contribution to their success, having no less than 10 members of the entire 22-man panel.

Emmett Celtic panel: Donal, Andrew, PJ, John, Adrian, Brendan, Pat, Declan, Dermot and David Nolan, Robert Doyle, Keith and David Byrne, Joe and Billy Hennessy, Bobby Elliot, Jim Harte, Noel O’Neill, Cathal Redmond, Sean Kinsella, Claude Dagge and John Joe Myers.
