Fun and games galore as playground is opened in Roundwood
TWO new playgrounds were opened in County Wicklow on Monday – one in Laragh and the second in Roundwood.
The playground in Roundwood is located beside the Roundwood and District Athletics track.
Both playgrounds have been eagerly anticipated and long sought after.
The potential for a playground in Roundwood first came to the attention of Wicklow County Council in 2012
The playground in Roundwood was funded by Wicklow County Council, Community Cultural and Social Development section and progressed by Director of Service, Michael Nicholson.
Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, Cllr Irene Winters, performing the official openings highlighted the importance of play in society and particularly following the latest COVID-19 restrictions which impacted especially hard on young children who express themselves through play.
‘Not every child wants to be spending hours sitting in front of a screen and this is where community playgrounds play an integral part in society,’ she said.
‘They are also a meeting place for parents and can lead to strong friendships and open up a social outlet for young mothers who may be isolated at home with small children.’
Frank Curran, Chief Executive, Wicklow County Council, thanked Haffey Playgrounds who completed the Roundwood project.
He also thanked the Wicklow Municipal District staff and councillors for their ongoing support of playgrounds within their area.
A special note of thanks was also paid to the Roundwood and District Athletics club for their co-operation with the development of the Roundwood facility.
It is hoped that these playgrounds bring lots of joy and magic into the lives of younger members of both communities for many years to come.
