Moore causes big shock
ARKLOW boxer James Moore caused a major upset when he defeated top Boston fighter Frankie Shea this week in 1996.
One of Arklow’s most successful boxers, Moore traveled to the US as a guest of the Sacred Heart Boxing Club in Dublin and dominated the first and third rounds of the bout to score the significant victory.
Boston native Shea came to the fight with big wins over Irish seniors Mark Dillon (Golden Cobra) and Paul Reilly (Tramore), and planned to turn professional after the contest.
But he found himself on the canvass in the first round from a solid right hand from Moore and picked up a warning in the second round for going in low which left his mission almost impossible.
Moore’s win caused such a shock that Shea did not wait to pick up his loser’s trophy.
