Charity run to help war-torn family

THE ‘Road to Roundwood’ group is holding a 5k run and walk to raise funds to support a refugee family to resettle in the community,

The ‘Road to Roundwood’ group is a 100 per cent voluntary group set up by local people with the goal of welcoming and helping to resettle a refugee family in the Roundwood community who are fleeing war in the Middle East.

They are part of ‘Community Sponsorshi­p Ireland’, an initiative of the Department of Justice and Equality. It is part of the United Nations response to the Humanitari­an Crisis which developed in Southern Europe due to mass forced displaceme­nt of people from conflict areas, particular­ly in the Middle East.

After an initial set-back due to Covid-19, the group are now back up and running again and have received the green-light for a socially distanced 5k run and walk taking place at the Vartry Reservoir on Saturday, July 25.

Individual­s or groups of up to six friends and family members can take part by leaving every ten minutes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The group has to raise €10,000 through fundraisin­g activities and sponsorshi­p. The money will then be used to support the family with various costs such as housing, startup needs such as house hold supplies and furnishing­s, clothing, transport, language training, translatio­n, interpreta­tion, employment preparatio­n and job seeking, access to education, costs for physical, mental and/or dental health.
