Bruins fall in overtime to Penguins

-

Facing one of the hottest and most dangerous teams in the NHL, the Boston Bruins gave an excellent effort most of the night but fell short, 4-3, in overtime against the Stanley Cup champion Penguins, who ran their winning streak to seven games.

The Bruins, who took the ice last night with a 7-0-1 points streak against the Penguins, were the better team for much of the game, but a pair of power-play goals helped Pittsburgh take it to overtime. That’s when Bryan Rust beat Ryan Spooner to the net and knocked in the game-winning backhander at 1:24.

David Pastrnak tied the game 3-3 at 13:20 of the third, after Pens goalie Matt Murray misplayed a puck. Pastrnak collected the fumbled puck and backhanded it in.

Goalie Tuukka Rask stopped a clean breakaway by Conor Sheary with 55 seconds left in regulation.

The game was tied 2-2 after 40 minutes, with Boston getting goals from Brad Marchand and David Krejci.

But the Pens took the lead at 9:03 of the third, when Sheary tipped in a pass Brian Dumoulin on a power play.

Flyers 4, Avalanche 3

Roman Lyubimov and Brayden Schenn scored goals 1:46 apart early in the third period, and the Philadelphia beat Colorado for their 10th straight win.

Wayne Simmonds and Michael Del Zotto also scored, while Steve Mason had 26 saves for Philadelphia.

The winning streak is the Flyers’ longest since 1985.

Matt Duchene had two goals and Rene Bourque scored for the Avalanche, who have lost six in a row at home. Calvin Pickard stopped 21 shots for Colorado.

Sharks 4, Senators 3 (SO)

Kevin Labanc was the only scorer in four rounds of a shootout as San Jose defeated Ottawa for their second win north of the border in 24 hours.

The Sharks also beat the Toronto Maple Leafs in a shootout Tuesday.

Joe Pavelski, Brent Burns and Chris Tierney scored for the Sharks in regulation. Bobby Ryan, Kyle Turris and Dion Phaneuf replied for the Senators, who have lost three straight, their longest losing streak of the season.

The Sharks were 0-for-7 on the power play, although Patrick Marleau appeared to score on one, but the goal was challenged and upon review was ruled offside.

Lightning 6, Flames 3

Alex Killorn had two goals and an assist to lead Tampa Bay over host Calgary.

Brian Boyle, who had gone 13 games without scoring, also had two goals for the Lightning, who ended a three-game losing streak.

Braydon Coburn and Andrej Sustr also scored for Tampa Bay, while Victor Hedman and Valtteri Filppula chipped in with three assists each.

Troy Brouwer and T.J. Brodie finished with a goal and an assist each for the Flames, whose winning streak ended at six straight games. Micheal Ferland also had a goal for Calgary.

The Lightning were without leading scorer Nikita Kucherov (undisclosed), who joined Steven Stamkos and Ryan Callahan on the sidelines. (Reuters)
